Sorry Brett,
It's really awful over here. 25C, just a little cloud, balmy NE winds keeping it nice, barbeques everywhere, everybody in party mood. Just popping into the circuit to meet Jim Pearson for a beer. Just awful.
AND..... we are starting with an all Audi front row. Still time to get some bets on but I doubt the odds will be much now.

Yes Dave, Rain! That's the great equalizer, except all that moist air will probably give the trucks even more HP:( , but the torque should get them spinning about...:D and then we might have a race.

You're also right - I can't see any reliability issues with the diesels and probably the most predictable and boring Le Mans in LMP1 for many a year.

I also predict a "levelling of the playing field" and an attempt to calculate parity in the not too distant future.

None of my diatribe should be taken as a negative against the achievments of VAG in the development of a racing diesel. This will surely and very quickly filter down to production cars, and then our American cousins can appreciate what a solid dependable energy efficient fuel it really is even in a sedan. I couldn't run my business without it.

But in motor racing? Track support vehicles maybe but racing? I thought truck racing was (is) the very poorest excuse for motor sport there ever was. Nah....

The worry now is that Sir Max Nosebleed is muttering "environmental considerations" regarding F1. Let's hope he doesn't go up this diesel highway too.

Audi R10 TDI also fastest in warm-up

Fastest time for Biela/Pirro/Werner (R10 TDI #8)
Transmission problem for R10 TDI #7
Frank Biela and Allan McNish nominated as start drivers

The new Audi R10 TDI was also the fastest car in the field in Saturday morning’s warm-up for the Le Mans 24 Hours. Setting the fastest time of 3m 33.946s was the #8 Audi R10 TDI (Frank Biela/Emanuele Pirro/Marco Werner). Allan McNish could complete only two slow laps with the "sister car” due to a transmission problem. The #7 Audi R10 TDI will be ready again in time for the start of the race
at 1700 hrs.

Meanwhile, Audi Sport Team Joest has nominated the start drivers for the race: Allan McNish will start from pole position with the #7 car. Frank Biela will be at the wheel of the R10 TDI #8 at the beginning of the race.

During the race, driver changes are planned as follows:

Audi R10 TDI #7: Allan McNish > Dindo Capello > Tom Kristensen
Audi R10 TDI #8: Frank Biela > Marco Werner > Emanuele Pirro

At 1300 hrs, before the start of the race, which will be shown on TV in various countries live and in full length, Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen will demonstrate his Siemens Audi A4 from the DTM to the spectators at the track. The most popular international Touring Car series will race for the first time at Le Mans on 15 October.

Thank you - Jim Pearson, family and friends for you hospitality and the countless invitations ( which I wish I could have taken up, believe me) , Tony Jasper et all with the 3 cars for visiting on Friday evening, and everybody else associated with RaceMet (Tony Hunt, Jim Fisher, and Julien Jubert).
It really is and endurance event for everybody.
It was an incredibly long and hot event but even so, the team we were with
did the business (yet again) with P1 and P3. I've just arrived home and I'll try and post some of our pictures. The good news for me is during the post race party,Audi's Dr Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport) has asked RaceMet to do the 24h in 2007.
I'll have to see if I can fit it in.......

Tough job

Hi David,
You know you have a really, really, tough job when the invitations and the hospitality wear you out more than the race. Congratulations to Audi.
Di and I will try to be there next year.

Pete, remember there should be a classic as well in 2008 but if you do come in 07 start thinking about Hotels as early as now. I've got the pictures from Monaco - can I post some here? I'll send them all on email anyway.
Was any of the race on TV in Australia?
Motors TV had awsome coverage and the commentators were definitely on the money nearly 100% of the time.

David, there was no Australian T.V. coverage that I could find. Hopefully Fox sports might show highlights soon. We are definitely planing to be at Monaco in 07, and thought Le Mans would be good to stick around for. So thanks for the heads up on Hotels.
I look forward to seeing the pics.

The fuel the Audi's ran on was apparently a clear spirit diesel manufactured from natural gas, and not something you could pick up from a supplier for anything less than $1,000 per gallon (if you could ever get it at all which you can't). As this comes under the heading of an extremely exotic fuel, I'm very surprised the ACO allowed it to start with. Not only that but it's a non renewable source and whilst it might be pollution free, 95% of the worlds remaining resources are under Russian control, so for economic and political reasons, it ain't going to be an option for us anytime soon.

It must have cost Shell an arm and a leg to develop it.

So why did they (Shell) do it, instead of going for Bio-Ethanol, an entirely renewable pollution free fuel, that has already proved itself with the sadly missing this year - Nasamax squad? Because they could? Perhaps someone with greater knowledge and wisdom could explain this to me.

Personally, I believe Bio-Ethanol is the way to go, not only because it's pollution free and makes race cars sound like race cars, but it smells like my favourite chip shop on the Mulsanne.

This all puts Henri's achievements at Le Mans this year in total persepective, as a privateer and running a British motor on pump gas.
Just my 2p worth....rockonsmile

Audi used approximately 5300 litres for both cars (1165 Imp Gallons, 1406 US gallons) running both cars at the 24h du Le Mans.
The average consumption for the cars was 2.44 Kilometers per litre which equates to 6.8 miles per imp.gallon.
Broadly similar to the R8 on racing petrol.
Keith,
I've asked Peter Fordemann of Shell Racing Solutions in Troisdorf to elaborate
on the fuel used in the R10 and will post his reply later this week.
I also applaud Henri Pescarolo's efforts. Superb result and I think (IMHO)the class LMP should be divided from 2007 into LMP(D) and LMP(P) to reflect and award the effort that Pescarolo and others put in, because clearly there will be more so called 'diesels' next year. At least I hope so because although I was working for the Audi Team I also think they ran away with it and the lead could have been as much as 10 laps (on paper).

Thanks for the heads up Dave. I've really lost the plot re: rules these days but I thought that like F1, sportscars were limited to commercially available fuel, or has that all changed? To be honest, whatever it cost Audi to run the 24 hours, what would be the cost of putting their products and technology in front of a worldwide audience of millions for 24 hours solid using any other traditional marketing methods?

I reckon they got away cheaply.

Sport it's not.:(

Keith,
Straining? - absolutely as Jo Mathias said he was about to drop the trophy then laughed and - (i) it was bloody heavy (ii) It was at the end of a long hot week with attendant sleep deprivation (iii) I'd had a few champagnes (I normally don't really imbibe but this was yet another occasion to savour I can't remember when I wasn't on the winning team) (iv) I'm 60 next year
(v) I have to wait for another year for the annual main event in my calendar(vi) any other excuse you can think of.

Dave, no excuses, that is definitely your party face and why not!!:)

You are making a habit of being on the winning side. Give me 6 numbers between 1 and 50 please.

I'm actually jealous - as my face is as fresh and seamless now i'm 60, as it was when I was 16.

Yeah, right, check my profile......
