302 Oil Pan

The title kind of says it all. What are you using for oil pan for 302? I have a 67 302 out of a mustang and the stock oil pan is pretty deep. Just researching what others have done..

If you're doing any kind of real spirited driving....you should use a baffled large capacity pan. Don't use the stock pan for any kind of track event...just my $.02. If you do, oil starvation could be a real issue.

There's a number of good pan makers out there who do a nice job of baffled large capacity pans....Moroso, Aviaid, etc. They're reasonably priced and worth it.

Personally, I have a Moroso 7.5-quart rear sump pan with baffles. Pretty happy with the quality and fit/finish.

Both have 4 gates and good oil control

The Aviaid I have on my engine has 4 gated baffles, side baffles and a top one over all the others. However, I had to modify an outside corner to allow for starter fitment. Hopefully the engine won't mind a few oz. less oil.

I made the mistake of not getting correct pan and had to make the starter notch like a caveman.

I have the Aviaid pan and the starter just touches the pan. It still attaches to the bell housing but I can’t even slip a piece of paper between them. Worried if I might need to dent it for clearance.

Heat expansion will only create greater contact, so yes, a bit of ball peen persuasion on the pan and some light Dremel work on the starter would be in order IMO.

Or, you could do what Rod did above.

Yeah I started marking it and will give it a little heat and a ball peen hammer and tap that curve of the starter into to pan. Doesn’t need much really but I don’t like parts not having clearance. Have to check and see which pan from Aviaid I actually have so others will know in the future.

A bit late to the party but fwiw. Since my standard 302 sump was the lowest part of the car and already scraped, I cut the protruding part off and made a new wide base to maintain the same capacity. This was back in 2010. Attached drawings and photos show what I did. I cut and bent the metal sheet, welded in the reinforcement and old sump plug then reformed the oil pickup pipe. Finally welded a reinforcing skirt around it all. I could have chosen a better location for the sump plug as it only just clears a crossmember.

Joep: I did. Very well made and perfect fit. Only thing to watch for is their dip stick is not accurate. They rate their pan's capacity (in this case 6 quarts) for the static volume NOT to include the rest of your system (filter, lines, oil cooler, etc.). I am running 6 quarts plus the nearly 1 quart it takes to fill the filter. That only read mid-way between the low and high marks on the stick. But all in all, a very nice piece. My engine builder gave it the thumbs up.
