351c with ZF

The engine is stamped with a four-digit number, 5442. Panteras were stamped with an engine number by De Tomaso during manufacture. They don't directly correlate to the VIN, but can give a good idea of the range that the car was built.

According to the old De Tomaso registry (circa 1994), Pantera No. 6306 had a motor number of 5426; Pantera number 6320 had motor 5461, and 6321 had 5471. So the drivetrain in question is almost certainly from the same vintage.

All of these cars were built in October of 1973, as early 1974 model year cars. That means they had low-compression (8.6:1) open-chamber-head engines, probably with two-bolt mains.

The gearbox is the exciting part of this auction. Given it was dry-stored in southern California, it's possible that it hasn't been ruined, but often these take-out gearboxes suffer from dramatic internal rust, and are literally junk inside.

Whoever buys this package had better plan on inspecting it internally, perhaps even partially dismantling it, before money changes hands!

Went for $5500. If it's in reasonable condition, that could be a good buy.
