Oh..........I like the undercoating idea! My track car NEEDS that right there. What kind of stuff did you use? Have you used this before? If so how well does it work to protect the body from stones (very high-speed stones)? Do you think bed-liner is better or worse as protection? I'm not really interested in aesthetics.

Aaron,

Nice work and great idea to protect these areas. I may do the same. On my GTO restoration I used a PPG product called DX Roadguard on the undercarriage and the wheel wells. It is holding up well and I may use it on my SLC now that I see what you are doing. Are you spraying color over the bedliner? That is a plus for the roadguard, it is designed to be used under the base coat and clear.

I’m using Wurth Stoneguard. It’s really good stuff…. I’ve used it before and it’s what is used on Porsches. It holds up well.

Aaron, What kind of prep did you do to the fiberglass before you sprayed on the Wurth. I'm thinking light sanding to level surface from stone chips and then clean with lacquer thinner. OK?

That is a similar product to the PPG DX Roadguard that I have used. Nice find.

Good luck on the go-kart session. I am envious of your progress, I am dying to get back in my shop to work on mine. Have not touched it in a month.

I sanded the surface with 80 grit to give it bite.. Cleaned it with a prep wipe and sprayed 2 separate coats of grey (separate times). Then covered with 2 coats of black. Sprayed separately. 4 coats builds good thickness for the highly damaged areas such as wheel wells.
