Advertising on the site

It's a real shame that I'm not able to advertise my GTD on the site without paying for a years "subscription"
When I'm sadly in the process of LEAVING the GT40 fold, I'd have to pay for a year when it will be of no use to me.
Likewise, a member that now uses the site and is looking for a '40 in the "for sale" section will not be able to see my car for sale.
There must be another way? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It's the same with the GT40 enthusiast club I think, I'd have to pay a years membership to place my car on there.

Hmmm, with 727 posts it looks like you've gotten you're mileage out of the site.

Seems like it might be the perfect place to advertise though and might be a wise investment to consider.

I haven't contributed yet but intend to when I do make my purchase as this place has been a phenominal contributor in my journey toward a 40.

Well, given the fact the forum generates money to be here based on advertisers and supporters is it really that bad? You've got 727 posts to your name and have been a member since Jan 16th of 2002 - do you feel that you've received some utility from the forum?

You can be a bronze supporter for $20 and advertise your car for sale - is $20 really too much to have a GT40 car ad with as many pictures as you want and that will run for as long as you want as well as let you respond to questions people ask?

I generally don't respond to questions such as this, but we really can't have a forum both ways. The reason that only supporters can post in the for sale section is so that people that are looking to move a car and not be a member of our community cannot post here. When it was open to everyone, a couple years back, all we had were "fly by nights" that wanted to move their car, use the site for free advertising, and move on. I deleted most of those posts in those days but it seemed that most of the forum community agreed that having a contribution necessary to sell a car was a good idea. We've got a strong audience of potential GT40 buyers and most felt the small contribution was worth it. Alternatively we could allow posting for free and have the user donate a small amount of money after the sale.

I'm open to any other suggestions to make it work.

Hey, Simon (SJRW), if you can get me one of those Jack Nicklaus 5 pound notes, I'll PAY for your bronze level membership for the year. I'll even pay for the shipping of the note from you to me. They issued 2 million of those notes, yet noone seems willing to reply to my request on the "Off Topic Posts" forum.

Simon,
No offence by this, over the last year when you have been repairing your GTD, would you not consider that $20 is worth the information and help/advice you have had from other forum members? Whilst the Donations are simply that, Donations; I am sure you can't begrudge £11 to help sell your car in probably one of the most focussed selling places you will find. I mean Autotrader will cost you £33 minium and that is for only 1 week in the magazine. Ron set out the rules a while ago. Plus, he has to help pay for the maintenance and licensing of the site, whilst giving of his time for free.

On the Enthusiast Club front (I am not speak for the committee, but from my viewpoint). Whilst I can't remember the exact policy; Why is it wrong if the club is asking for advertising rates, if you are not a member? Why should you have any of the benefits? If the club is asking for advertising monies, it is no different to that of you advertising in Which Kit or Kit Car, once again, at a very focussed audience. Also, by asking for non-members to pay for advertising would it not then allow off-set of magazine production, which in turn allows the club to have money to spend of nicer events, such as: Spa, Festival of Speed, Le Mans Classic and Stoneleigh?

I appreciate that if you are selling your car, and you like any other person wants to do that as cheaply as possible to maximise your return on your investment. On the flip side, other people have to look after their investments, namely that of this site and that of the GT40EC.

Like I said at the beginning, no offence meant by this, I just wanted to put my viewpoint across and the way I see it that is all.

Hey Simon,
You get me, Ron and Mitch one of those 5# notes and I'll pay for you to be a life time member and put an ad in your local newspaper for you. Plus pay you for the note /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just to throw it out there - of course you can have a banner ad for $300 that links to a site as well. Expensive? Well, not when you look at the coverage and what some of the high-dollar exotic car and speciality cars magazines charge for their "For Sale" sections.

He He.

Sorry guys, bad day, bad mood. Didn't mean to be an ungrate....
Already spent my money on the autotrader ad AND three ebay listing AND other places. It's getting dam*ed expensive to sell this car (especially when I'm selling only BECAUSE I need the money)
Simon
Oh yes, a bit pi**ed of as well 'cause several Ebay bidders used this site to locate pictures of my car when it was damaged and didn't take the time to read through all the posts to see that the car was returned to better than new spec. They then withdrew their bids (hence the re-listing)
Guess I shouldn't have shared those pics or the info so freely. (not the fault of the site or anyone else on it but me)

Brett,

Just one point

"Why should you have any of the benefits?"

I would have thought it was a benifit to the MEMBERS (as not all members have cars yet) to have a car advertised for them to buy?

Just my weird take on things I 'spose.

Simon

I'll reiterate my offer for a 5 pound Nicklaus note, Simon. How much do you want for the note? Plus I'll pay for shipping. I know there are many, many, many of the Nicklaus notes on cbay, but I thought it would be fun to correspond with someone in the UK or Scotland to obtain one that way. Any clod can buy one on ebay.

I'll even pay for a round of pints for you and all your buddies - so long as you all drive to the pub in your GT40! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Simon, seems to me that everyone now knows your car is for
sale and it has not cost you anything. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Certainly not, they've been a lifelong passion of mine, from owning a small "matchbox" GT40 when I was a boy to owning my GTD, But I can't see me owning another for many years. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Guys,

Please accept my apologies for my bad tempered rant, lots of personal things getting me down at the moment and I took them all out on the site, and you guys were on the recieving end.
I was wrong, I should have kept my mouth shut. You are all absolutely right, this site and the gt40 community have been invaluable over the past year or so, and I disgraced myself with my outburst.
I am truly sorry. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I read this thread with dismay - that Simon felt as he did about advertising his car, and for the Enthusiasts Club being dragged into what could have been a very acrimonious argument.
Simon - spoken like a man. I'm sure no one will blame you during what must be a very trying time. I hope you sell your car well, preferably to someone who will contribute to this forum as much as you have in the past.
Don't disappear, I for one have valued the insights you have given us into your accident last Autumn and the illustrations of the work you have done on your car since.
