Argentine Shipping Embargo

The Argentine government have decreed they will control any shipping passing between the Falkland Islands and the Argentine mainland.

There are three points that Cristina Fernandez, President of Argentina should address.

1. Does she know where the Royal Navy Submarines are ?

2. Can she remember the Belgrano and how many Argentine
conscripts lost their lives in vain?
3. Did Argentina learn anything at all from time of the Galteiri Junta ?

STUPID TART !

Breaking news - two warships ( I love that word - is there such a thing as a peaceship) are en route to the Falklands.
Allegedly.

David,

What ridiculous posturing on their part. methinks the tried and tested "Problems at home nullified by a bit of foreign muscle flexing" may be at play here but who knows.

Whatever it is, it is pointless and futile (unless the French want to sell some more Exocet missiles :) ).

Absolutely Graham. They are in deep guano but according to their stats unemployment IS down year on year.

Exocets ?

Block 1B Phalanx, displaying the FLIR ( Forward looking infra red).
and improved barrel on the Vulcan gun.

Sometimes also known as R2-D2 this is the CIWS (close in weapon system)
that has 100% success against Exocet.
Allegedly.

Wow... Is this the same unit as used on the Aegis cruisers?

All I need now is a shoulder mounting mechanism, and I would be Arnold Shwarzenigger...

Hey war mongers , whats at the Faulklands worth fighting over ??
Obviously ignorant 'ere

Not just oil Chris. There are massive mineral reserves on the doorstep in Antartica and nations have been manoevering over this for years. You don't think Maggie went to war and risked her career and reputation for sheep and a few Islanders do you?

Pretty Gung Ho! and all that, but it was extremely risky and a close run thing.

If the Panama Canal ever went tits, the Falklands also strategically protects/threatens the main sea route to the Pacific (Cape Horn). Sort of ancient "Empire Strategy" but you never know.

In any event, the Argentian PM is only proving the theory (or trying where Galtieri failed) that a common outside enemy will distract the disgruntled population, at least for a while...

David, hopefully this is all posturing and it will self-defuse. Didn't they learn ANYTHING from the last time? I guess we all get to sing 'Rule Brittannia' again if someone doesn't come to their senses.

Oil drilling platform the Ocean Guardian is due arrive off the Falkland Islands today

Hostilities between the UK and Argentina will reach boiling point today with the arrival of a British oil rig off the Falkland Islands.
Buenos Aires has threatened to take steps to prevent what it believes is 'illegal' drilling - including a blockade of ships.
But oil exploration firm Desire Petroleum confirmed that the huge drilling platform Ocean Guardian was due to enter the archipelago's waters in defiance of the Argentine government's warnings.
News that the tugs towing the rig had sailed into Britain's 200-mile exclusive economic zone around the disputed territory came as it emerged the Ministry of Defence was bolstering its military presence in the area.
Four warships are in the South Atlantic, including the destroyer York anchored off the islands' capital Port Stanley, and four RAF bombers have been deployed as a show of strength, military sources claimed.
Britain also has more than 1,000 service personnel on the Falklands, which are still claimed by the Argentinians despite their crushing defeat in the 1982 war.
Gordon Brown responded to Argentinian sabre-rattling by insisting yesterday that the UK had made 'all the preparations that are necessary' to protect the territory, which has a population of 3,000.
But Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague said the Royal Navy's presence in the region should be increased further to act as a deterrent.

Tensions between Britain and Argentina have flared up over the imminent drilling operation by four British firms set to begin next week. Experts claim there could be 60billion barrels of oil in the rocks deep beneath the ocean floor.
Desire Petroleum will tether the Ocean Guardian drilling platform between 30 and 60 miles north of the Falklands coast.

From The BBC

Argentina has $13bn of international debt that matures this year, and a hole in its budget of between $2bn and $7bn.
However, it was Argentina that unilaterally decided in 2007 to scrap an agreement with the UK to share the proceeds of any oil discoveries in Falklands waters.
The decision was taken by the government of Nestor Kirchner, the predecessor and husband of the current president.

Under the Kirchners, Argentina has increased pressure on the UK to reopen talks on the sovereignty of the islands.

Right guys, this is what will be happening on board Ocean Guardian.

LONDON -- Falkland Oil and Gas Limited (FOGL) is set to drill its first exploration well off the Falkland Islands. The Diamond Offshore semisub Ocean Guardian will drill the Toroa prospect in the East Falklands basin, probably during the first half of 2010.

Late last year, Desire Petroleum negotiated a multi-well program with the rig for its prospects in the North Falkland basin with the aim of releasing certain rig slots to other interested parties in the region. Rockhopper also has taken up this offer for its northern Falkland acreage.

The well on Toroa will be operated by FOGL’s partner BHP Billiton Petroleum. BHP submitted an environmental statement last September to the Falklands Islands government to drill two wells on Toroa and the Loligo prospect in license areas PL015 and PL028. At that point, no rig had been commissioned.

Toroa’s well, 160 km (99 mi) south of Port Stanley, will be the first ever drilled this far south. All previous exploration, during the multi-well campaign of 1998, was in the North Falklands basin. According to the operational addendum for the environmental statement, the well should take 30-40 days to drill.

Rockhopper Exploration PLC

Rockhopper Exploration ("Rockhopper") (AIM: RKH) is an AIM listed oil and gas exploration company based in the United Kingdom.
Rockhopper has licences to explore for oil and gas in the North Falkland Basin, a basin with two proven petroleum systems and a proven high quality oil source rock. Two wells have been drilled on Rockhopper licences during 1998 by Shell, who held the licences at that time. One recovered live oil, the other encountered significant quantities of gas.
The company was admitted to AIM in 2005 and has since completed an extensive work programme in the area, including two 2D seismic surveys, a 3D seismic survey, four CSEM lines, site surveys and benthic sampling.
Rockhopper raised £50 million by way of an equity placing during late 2009 and will now participate in 5 wells during a drilling campaign in 2010 using the Ocean Guardian.
