early vin question?

Why couldn't a person buy a 1964 or '65 ford sedan with a 289, use the 289 in your gt-40, and then cut out the Vin number and affix it to your gt-40, and say that the car has been "modified over the years", thereby being able to register the car according to the title, and smog would also never be a problem either. Just wondering...

Many people have done what you have suggested and I don,t know of any problems. However it is a fraudulent registration and could result in lots of problems that you would not want. 1) Any police officer or motor vehicle dept. rep could conviscate the car for various reasons. 2) No insurance company has to honor their policy if you have fraudulently represented your vehicle to them. Thats just two reasons not to take the chance. A number of states now have provisions for titling your car legally - so why not do it that way?
