G96/G86 - Any Shared Audi Components?

Hello,

I've come across all sorts of great info on this forum. So I thought I would join up to ask more questions... I'm from the V8 Porsche community - I have a 997 with a Gen V LT1 mated to a G96 (car was previously a tiptronic, so I opted for G96 during the swap). Machined my own adapters, uses a stock 991.2 or 991.1 GT3 twin disc clutch with dual mass flywheel. It's a fantastic combo! Of course, as you all know, the annoyance of the Porsche boxes with V8s is the short gearing. Albins used to make a 0.6 6th gear, and it sounds like they are planning to bring this back based on some emails exchanged with Retro-Sport.

What I am wondering, is there any Audi boxes that share components? It seems like the 0A2 and Cayman S G87 are identical except gear ratios, so the 6th gear set that Advanced Automation sells is a perfect drop in for the Cayman swaps (or just getting an entire 0A2). However, I am unable to find anything on the G86/G96/G97 for Audi interchangeability. 01X seems to be from a similar time period, but maybe it's not similar internally.

Thanks!

The 01X has narrower gears than the 01E so probably not anything that would swap into the Porsche box. You might try California Motorsports and see what they know. I havent see an 0A2 so cant comment on them but the 01E/01X look different externally than the Boxster/Cayman transmissions so I would suspect not much would interchange.

I did shoot them a message too, they didn't think any audi parts transferred in either unfortunately. Good to know the 01X has smaller gears, that checks that one off too unfortunately. Maybe Albins will bring back their 6th gear sooner if other show some interest. But I'm also thinking the price of used 7 speed manuals may come down in the near future. Probably not ideal for you guys with the GT40 bodies unfortunately.

Does anyone have any more information here? What is the distance between the input and output shaft of these gearboxes? That is a good indicator to the torque capability, next to the gear widths. Where can you find G86/G96/G97 parts?

Who made the G86/G96/G97 and who made the VW/Audi gearboxes?

I have a 0a2 in the shed. A little limited on info for g86/87 other than a 3d scan of a g86. From what i found the Porsche boxes are symmetrical while the vag box has the diff offset, if you look at the casing it looks like the Porsche box has the shafts vertical above each other while the vag box has the offset here aswell.

Diffs appear pretty much the same but different offset on the crownwheel.

I can make any measurements this weekend from my G86.20 if that helps. This is a ‘00-‘04 6 spd Boxster S manual.

These are different gearbox series. The 01E / 02A series are VW gearbox designs. The G86/G96/G97 are GETRAG gearbox designs. When Porsche and VW merged, they discontinued the GETRAG G series gearboxes and used the common 02A gearboxes from VW. The 02A was built in far higher numbers so it made sense to use that for all Porsche applications also.

Did things get better? Maybe, maybe not.
Did things get cheaper? Definitely yes, otherwise they would have not done it.

post 57 here

Internals are not the same as G86/G87 but I cannot edit it anymore. Can somebody edit this original post?

Here a direct comparison between the 01E (orange) and the G86.20 (blue). The 01E has more clearance to the road/bottom. Overall same length, but certainly different gearbox. The G86.20 seems like a slightly larger gearbox (in width and height). The shaft center distance of the 01E (red, 75mm) is smaller than the G86 (blue, 86mm, +15%). The 01E comes with the tall Diesel ratios, the G86.20 is a very close ratio transmission. Porsche ditched the G86.20 which was likely more expensive than the VW 01E (and its successor transmissions 0A2).

The g86/g87, not sure about difference between them... If you look into the Porsche parts fiche i recall that quite a few parts had vag 0a2 part numbers. The 0a2 has the diff offset while the Porsche version is symmetrical. You can clearly see this in the casting of the box aswell.

The 01e is a bit different to the 0a2 when it comes to bearings etc. I would recommend that you look into the ssp for both of the boxes as that will give you a deeper insight of the differences.

Thanks. G86 was the same gearbox (rotated diff) than 996 Porsche 911.

Has nothing to do with 01E or 0A2. After 2004, they switched to the cheaper VAG 0A2 gearbox.
