GT-40 or GTM or Ultima GTR

Hi Everyone
I am in the process of looking for my next car to purchase and I would love some opinions. I was curious if you were given the choice between a GT-40 or GTM or Ultima GTR which one you would choose and why. Thanks!!!

Dan

A GT40 of course.....icon of true race car style and function.....

Just a thought but you may get some seriously one sided answers on this forum....

I've only seen 2 of them, but....

Having seen the Ultima, I'd go for the GT40 hands down. The styling is better, IMHO, and even though the mechanical configuration seems to be the same for both, the Ultima I saw didn't seem to have that undefinable "zing" the GT40's have.

Fran's right, though--we do tend to be a bit GT40 crazy around here.

Ultima GTR: Very cool car. Expensive and not very nice looking.
GTM: I have seen a few of these in person(Carlisle/SEMA) Not impressed with the quality of the kit or the overall look .Looks half finished (design wise)
GT40: Greatest car in the world! The choices that are available today are AMAZING!

Dan, if you really need to ask the question then there's no point in including the GT40 in that group IMHO.

I'm sorry. That wasn't a very nice answer. I would strongly recommend a GT40 for the following reasons.

1. The year that the car was produced can be a VERY important issue when trying to register the car. California for example will let you choose either the year of the car or the year of the motor for smog requirements (many more details here but I am only covering this as part of this list, not the complete process). This
can really make your day when you can put ANY power train you want to into your car because there were no smog controls in 1965.

2. Both cars can be made to perform beyond your wildest dreams. The GT looks better doing it.

3. There are at least 5, really, really well made kits/rollers/turnkeys on the market right now. You choose what you want to do. Drive it right now or build it form scratch and everything in between.

4. Nobody will ask you "Is that a real GT40?" because they will think it is a VW kit-car or something like that. You have no idea how many people I would bet my house would never know what a GT40 looks like ask me that.

5. You can't park it (ulitma) in the middle of a bunch of Ferrari's and have EVERYONE look at your car first and enjoy pissing off all those evil red devil owners.

6. I believe that the mono's among the builders have a more advanced design than the Ulitma's space-frame.

7. I believe that the Ulitma's exaust isn't a 180 design. The bundle of snakes is the best part of a GT40! Oh that sound!

8. Many more fellow owners to play with. Not to mention you will be adoped by the cobra and mustang guys as kind of a lost cousin.

9. This forum.

10. Le mans, history, Gurney/Westlake valve covers, Holman and Moody valve covers, BRM wheels, those cool doors, and that big sill stripe down the side with FORD GT40 in it.

11. That GTM aint got no V8 man! See #7.

AND I might add that the ladies know what a GT40 is. They will have NO clue what a Ulitma is.

I asked this question around 2 years ago, prior to choosing the GT40.

First, be sure of what your looking for:
- a build project,
- a track day toy,
- a high profile race car replica,
- a high spec road car.

I looked at several GTR's, and really fancied one, but was always comparing it to the GT40. I had been to the GTD factory in 1990ish but not brought one at that time due to buying a house !
I wanted a track day toy that is streetable to get there & back, but not a daily driver.

What struck me was that you will see several GTR's for sale at any one time, and they really do not seem to sell well. Maybe it is bbecause those thatfancy one want to build their own. They also suffer a number of issues with corrosion, and bad water sealing causing electrical problems. There are a few build sites giving really detailed build information.
The big advantage the GTR has (imo) is the off the shelf Chevy engine builds that make awesome power. Far more than most of the Ford engines seem to see. They are normally mated to a G50 gearbox though, which don't last too long if your in the habit of doing burn-outs...

For me though, the wife had the final say, (that's what I tell her anyway :D) and she prefered the GT40.
The 40 is as Howard says, far more recognisable. Both seem to draw the same amount of attention from the guys, but the 40 wins hands down with the girls (mine is still in build, so this is based on observations rather than first hand experience).

The bottom line is, only you can make the final choice based on your requirements. You have asked the question on a 40 forum though, so you will get biased opinions ;)

gt 40 versus

ofcourse we are biased. But do this as a test, take a good picture of the cars and show them to your friends, collegas and or family.Young or old, women or men and look to there faces.I think we all know the answer. But after all its you who must decide,Iwould know!Sincerely Emiel

With the amount of time, effort, energy and money you will invest, pick the one that YOU like and the others be damned. It's your car, make sure it makes YOU happy.

Just my $.02...

Went through the same decision...

Initially started with the idea of the GTM. Personally, I was not a fan when I saw it in person. The Ultima is the better track car, it is more purpose built for performance. If all-out performance is your number 1 goal, I think the Ultima is better. The Ultima is not what i would call a pretty car. It has a busniess-like badass look, but it ain't pretty - the shape is about downforce, not looks.

The GT40 offers incredible performance with style and history that make it so much more well rounded. The reviews of it's aerodynamics vary, but it certainly is plenty fast for me on a track. And will be more comfortable, more livable, more enjoyable on the road.

Hi Dan,
Can't speak for the ultima, I have only seen pics on the web. But as someone who has built a couple of FFR cars and who did clime all over the GTM at SEMA a year ago, I would not consider the GTM to be in the same class as the RCR40 (which I am building). I say this as a matter of my opinion which affected my own purchase decision. To me they should not be on the same list.

I haven't checked in a while...but if budget is tight, I believe the GTM
can still be built for significantly less than the GT40/Ultima.
It also has the advantage of FFR's support team...and a very enthusiastic
group of owner builders. However like the Ultima....it lacks history.
The GT40 (like the Cobra) is more than just a cool car...it's a time machine.

I have to say, the FFR GTR grew on me. I really didn't like it much when it first appeared, but, after awhile I warmed up to it. I don't think it is anywhere close to being in league with a GT40, but it isn't that bad. A large number of them are under construction on the Factory Five Forum and they'll have a good following with the Factory Five faithful.

However, I'd prefer the Ultima over the GTR, and the GT40 over the Ultima. What do you expect, you're on a GT40 forum? :)

Dan, the GTM isn't in the same league, from there on it's simple mate, sexy fast car or ugly fast car, you pays your money.......
