Sad to relate that Henry Surtees, son of F1 great John was killed in an accident at Brands Hatch.

Noooo! Oh crikey. John will be devastated. I worked for John in the '60's and he was a true gentleman. I never met his son but I have watched him race and Henry was a rising star for sure...

A wheel? Don't they have tethers in that Formula?

I know John doted on his son, he used to take him regularly to Buckmore Park gokart track from when he was a small boy. John used to race the Formula two "matchbox" cars that my fathers firm used to sponsor, I met both him and Mike Hailwood when I was a youngster and they both left a huge impression on me. Very very sad news, my sincerest condolences to the Surtees family.

Kieth - yes they are fitted with wheel tethers and F1 style cockpit head restraint/ side headrests but with such a force the tethers would not have held on either of the cars.
The accident footage is on utube - obviously massive forces involved.
How sad.
