Simon, you sound quite keen for your GTD to be worthless! :-) Right now I am quite keen for something, indeed anything, that I own not to be plummeting in value! I doubt I will get my wish though.

On that last car, it was built by Pierre Marie, was sold to Michele Albereto but not sure who had it after that. It is a shame that it has lost its sill stripes. They were individually signed by many famous GT40 drivers and most likley were worth quite a bit of money in their own right. Pierre went to some lengths to send the stripes round and all signed willingly. A shame I don't have a memory of the list of drivers but it was a good who's who in the GT40 world.

I made many offers on GTD's over the last couple of years, all were rejected by the sellers. My offers were largely based on prices I knew had been applied to GTD's within this community. I came extremely close to buying Chris K's Essex Liveried car. Olivier's blue ex-Simon Winter car has been for sale for about two years to my knowledge?
Many very excellent cars I missed, and they all sold for well less than poorer examples that still crop up for sale. I ended up buying something else to attain the quality I wanted from a GTD but clearly couldn't afford! Some might argue that I paid too much for my P4, when you consider the level of modifications I am going to to get it right. But even if I did, the seller pitched his price and I took it. Another man may not have.

To sum up, they really are worth what someone is willing to pay and the asking price is based solely upon how quickly the seller wants to move it. The paradox is that spec and build quality clearly have nothing to do with acheived sale prices.

I am not so sure that was ex alboreto car.
According to my documentation (a newpaper of some years ago of him testing the car on the road) it was a gtd mk2.
I have anyway Emanuele Pirro in my facebook contacts and will ask him to be even more sure.
Pirro is a modeller and carnut too,so probably will help.

Anyway consider that outside Uk car market is quite different and there is a great possibility to find not so well informed people about special cars as a gt40,even replica is (in that auction i will choose the little mg metro B group:)).
Prices can increase a lot also changing just country (Simon's car is in France..if it will arrive to Italy price can increase a lot again too..),and in places where I live ..already a pilgrim sumo is something really too special (still for ordinary people).
add to this..just see and hear a gt40 makes your brain disconnect from everything else, and so probably u will finish the good selling, even more in places as my ferrari land where people comes crazy at cars.

Look at the profile of people inside our forum, almost all american, british, newzealand and australia...and of the rest europeans?..very very few!How many italians?..10?(and i think in 60 milion people there is someone more loving gt40 as Paolo here does..) how manye Germans?..20?(and they are 80 milions..Tom's finished car will be the greatest promo car of Fran in Germany..)

Saw that over my skin in le mans classic....we see a gt40 (and the first we saw was a dark blue/silver stripes over a trailer),plated Uk..u cant heard the scream we all did looking just it going to the entrance of the track.... ;)

I agree with you Simon, its worth what someone will pay for it, and who wouldn't try to get as much for their car as they can??

In the new year i could be in a position to buy the car of my dreams, GT40. I should have about 25k GBP to spend. Trouble is of course that there are no longer any cars for that sort of money on the market. 2 or 3 years ago i could of got one for that sort of money. I have been passionate about the GT40 for the last 20 years, and its been a dream to own one. I also like the Ultima GTR or Sport and i can pick up a GTR for the sort of money i will have to spend. So now its decision time, do i buy an Ultima because i can afford one at the moment, or do i hold out in the hope that the GT40 will come down in price in the current financial climate? Also, is it me or are there not so many on the market recently?

Jason,

Ulimas are WAAAAY down in price at the moment. Cars that were up for high 30s to mid 40s are now down to mid 20s (check out pistonheads website)
GT40s may be dearer, but they don't seem to be selling at those prices (my old GTD has been for sale for two years with no takers!)
If they are worth what someone will pay for them...and nobody is buying them at 55K, then they are not worth 55K
Keep looking Jason, I'll bear you in mind if I come across anything.

Simon
