How the U.N. works.

Ooooh...what a scolding the speaker was given afterwards...I am sure that he was taken aback and hung his head like a good lil school child.

"If you don't change your tone with me, the next time you give a speech that we don't agree with, we will have it stricken from the record."

What pompous pricks.

The UN has done some good things over the years, and has been a stabilizing force is many horrible situations around the world. It has also attempted promote human rights ideals to the best of its practical real-world power and authority. This shouldn't be diminished or go unrecognized.

However, all too often, it's painfully clear that the UN doesn't have much of an authoritative presence to force change, rather than simply request it. And, the UN's debate process is so slow and cumbersome that whatever steps may be put into action are often too late (as well as too little).

The UN should be taking more of the global spot light and leading with bold statements and bold actions. Instead, it has been hampered by its own weak leadership, internal analysis paralysis, (false) sense of self importance, and culture of endless debate to no resolution or action.

The UN needs to grow a backbone and get some strong leadership.

There was 10 seconds of dead air after the "rebuke"....I waited, patiently, for the original speaker to shout "Fork You"......I'm guessing that he did, but that it was stricken as had been promised.

What crap!

Im with Cliff, the UN needs strengthening not disbanding.

Jon, I used disbanding, but maybe I should have said reformed, the original concept of the United Nations was great and yes Cliff they have done some great work especially in the early days. Now IMHO it is populated by free loading, cocktail swilling third world anarchist's who's only agenda is to look after their own vested interest's and those of their cronies. The world's most expensive toothless tiger and club for old boys.

Pete,
I think that's a fair assessment of where the UN is right now.

I think the ideals on which the UN was born were great, but it has lost its way and now needs to be renewed.

Cliff, I'm sure it could be said that Adolph did some good things over the years as well.

IMO, when the few good things the UN has done are balanced against what they cost and what they HAVEN'T done over the years, they should be disbanded.

They are a joke.

Can anybody say "World League"? That origional attempt failed and was replaced by the UN...and they have failed. The good guys gave away too much power to third world dictators and anarchists in the political process. I agree that it is a cash cow for these idividuals and another corrupt political body for pols to steal from. Let's run 'em out!

I don't know Pat, apparently he was a half decent artist, a good high school level student, and he treated his mother and Eva very lovingly. Supposedly he also liked children. Other than that, I don't think there's much positive that can be said for the man.

You guys must be too young to remember a country in Africa called "The Congo" and the wonderful things the UN did there. It makes Rhowanda(sp?) look like childs play. The graft and corruption in the UN is well documented. Especially the Secretary Generals. The U S is the most hated country in the U N. But we give the most money. Look at the countrys that are the leaders of every department and tell me they are doing good. I will leave it up to you to feret this information.

Having been deployed as a "Smurf" under an international UN team to Bosnia, and dealing with the leadership that could at best be termed a complete clusterfuck, I say No Thank You...and good riddance. The sooner the better.

Just occured to me! As Obama is so hot to close gitmo, why not strike a deal - close gitmo so we can move the UN there and we will stay home and not play.
