ITT : Alex learns about porsche engines

If you want ~600hp out of a porsche 6 cylinder engine, what would be the most reliable and cost efficient way to do it? 996 TT + turbo upgrades?

Is there anyway to do it n/a cheaply? (I get the feeling not since I recall crate gt3 engines were something stupid like 40k?)

Who are the most trusted/reputable dealers you would look at for buying/going over/refurbishing the engine if you were going to buy one?

Porsche 996 TT and did a few turbo mods. 500HP at the rear wheels. He actually practically stole the car from a laid-off NASA engineer at the Cape.

And then I have to ask, why??????????????????
 
A buddy of mine had a 996 turbo that made up to 700hp; with pump gas it could make 600. The engine ran completely stock internals, the only thing he needed to get it done was the $30,000 turbo upgrade kit. I believe he had the EVO gt700 kit.

I think asking for 600hp from a N/A Porsche 6 cylinder is a little much. Alex, when you want to know how much hp an engine can make, think in terms of power per liter. The highest strung, most output per liter a factory engine ever made was the s2000's F20C engine at 120hp per liter (maybe recently eclipsed by the 458 Italia). With a 3.6L 996 porsche engine, you would need to make 166hp per liter. An engine in this state of tune would probably only last a race or so and wouldn't really be streetable. I don't even think this is obtainable with a 3.6l porsche engine. Most engines are hard pressed to break even 100hp per liter.

Of course this applies to N/A engines... With forced induction, well.. anything is possible!

30k seems like a lot? YOu can get this tt upgrade kit for 5-6k

You can look up the EVO GT700 kit and see whats in that. Its got quite a bit more stuff than the AMS kit. Also, im sure a lot of that money went to the labor of installing it. He's not one to do his own work..

Evolution Motorsports/EvomSit is very reputable. They've been around and their tunes are proven. APR has a tune for a 997TT that is 610hp with 100 octane. You can switch between a 93 (or 91) octane street map at the mid 500's to the 100 octane if you want 610hp on the track. That's just a tune, no hardware. TPC racing is also a solid company.
 
Alex, if you take a stock 993 TT motor and open up the exhaust and change fueling the motor should run 500 hp. To get additional hp you need to add boost (by changing the two turbos) and run an efi setup. This is a $40k motor.

I don't know as much about the 996 and 997 tt water-cooled motors, but I believe you can go out to 4 liters on them and make the kind of power that you want. Be prepared for expensive learning lessons....
 
Alex, October's Excellence magazine has an article on a GT3RS and it produces, with two turbos, 1086 hp. The beauty of the GT3 engine (or turbo) is that it is based on the old air cooled engines of years gone bye. The 996/997 engines are low cost engines, and stay away from the 996 3.4. It was always weak. The German tuner 9ff did the engine mods.
 
Here is a friends dyno graph from his '74 911 with a (I believe a 996) twin turbo engine from one of the modern turbo cars. Not positive which one, because like cockroaches, there are too many Porsches to keep track of. Apparently that engine was worth between $35k-$40k and made that power on 91 octane but was pushing the limits of power with that octane and was at it's reliable limits according to him.

He is now replacing that boat anchor with something that is lighter, more powerful, more reliable, and less than half the cost.

No doubt on race gas and tuned just for the 1000+ number with no thought of reliability/longevity.
Regardless, it is still impressive though.
 
Have you ever noticed on TQ/HP graphs that the rotary guys hands start to shake as they are drawing the lines in toward the top right corner, its like they are scared they will get caught in the act...:)
