Hi

Ive decided I want to take the advice of the people here to get a Replica for what I want to achieve... faster/cheaper/lighter than to do it with a GT and it gains the bonus of the awesome wheelbase.

well...

Whats the difference between MK1-2-3 etc GT40s?

Do they 'look' different?

Im more interested in the look of the car not the performance as that can be built however being a Replica. Can someone perhaps put some pictures of the differences in terms of looks even if there slight different angles or cosmetically different position of lights and so forth... any minor difference post the photos of the different models so I can physicaly see the differenec...

That would be appreciated. Thank you guys!

George,

Yes, there was the MK1, 2, 3 & 4.

The Mk1 was the first of the 40's, the street cars and early race cars, they had 289s. They are considered to be the "standard" one. The MK 1 cars later won Le Mans in 1968 & 1969, as the "Gulf" cars, they used 302's.

The MK 2 were the 1966-67 race cars, they made just a few and I'm pretty sure they were modified from MK1 chassis. The had big side oiler 427's, the front body work was slightly different, the rear very different. This one won Le Mans in 1966.

The MK 3 cars were a modified MK1, with a different front with four, round headlights to meet US headlight height regulations and a longer rear body to add a "trunk", they only made four or five.

The MK1,2 & 3 all had essentially the same center section, tub, roof, windshield and doors.

If you Google GT40 and hit images you'll get lots of pix.

The MK4 cars were really a differedt animal, using only the MK2 motor/trans. They had a totally different body & chassis, 427,s and won Le Mans in 1967

As to which is preferred, who knows! The MK1 is by far the most prevalent.

I fell in love with the original cars, have a MK1, and love it. But over the years, as each model came out, I always thought they were all fantastic.

Rene,

The first few had slightly different nose design, additionally, the tub and suspensions had slight mods and of course tires and wheel openings got wider. But for the most part the chassis #P1000 and the last Gulf racer looked very very similar.

So...

‪Skyline GTR vs. Ford GT40‬‏ - YouTube

Just look at the Replica in this...

Which version would this be as this is the one I like the exterior on.

Doesnt have all those crazy air scoop things behind the rear window, doesnt have the big hole in the boot lid at the front... (looks more like the GT style front), the air scoops are nice and clean through the car...

ALso the rear panel doesnt look like a big hole... to me this is probbably what I would be after.

THis is what Mk1 2 3 4 ?

Thanks guys :)

O btw- I do love the look of the Ford GT... I cant seem to pick the difference between the Replica and a 2005 GT... except the 2005 GT has 2 looking headlights in the headlight mould vs the big single rectangle... can I just add the GT style headlights in the GT40 replica to give it that slightly newer look?

Is there anything else thats actually different other than size and rear panel between the GT and GT40 or front angle... they are identical? Same curves etc... ?

they look different for some reason just cant pick for the life of me what it is... is it perhaps just the paint...?

this is the one I like the exterior on.

Mark I.

Re the Mark I vs. 2005 GT appearance differences, there are a lot of pictures of both on the web. If you will simply look at them you will see the differences. If you don't see them, then they probably don't matter.

Hint: look carefully at the side scoops and the tail lights.

Thanks Alan
They are the differences I knew... also the GT40 rear panel (entire thing lifts off) while the GT only the top half does...

The scoop on GT is like an Added thing while GT40 is part of the body

I was more or less trying to work out if the roof line/rear window (that shape) and curves around the wheels were the same or different... and whether the front had a slightly different shape...

Thats the part I cant work out.

And a Mk2
Notice
1) Bigger arches over fron wheels
2) Bigger air scoops on rear clip
3) Air scoops on rear clip to direct cooling air to rear brakes

Thanks for that.

Looks like to me after some extra searching... the GT is a remake of the MK1.

Im gonna go with the MK1 sort.

Thanks :D

Now I just gotta work towards owning one, but at least I know what I want.

when I saw my first 2005 GT I found it a bit to big compared to the lovely lemans type 1968 mk1
but I really love the rear of that 2005 ford GT, better (dare I say) then most mk1 rears, but overall the mk1 (1968) looks best for me.
although the other types have also their charmes and are a bit rarer in replica's I think.

@Jim thanks.

As far as I read they are both as wide as eachother minus 1 or 2 inches only?

I like a wide looking car (example, a Diablo 2040mm)

Does the GT40 look wide?

George,
You can have the GT 40 as wide as you want. The early originals were actually very boxy in width.
Earlybodies.jpg

But as the early years passed on the wells got wider necessitating wider fenders as you can see on my car early into the build.

Here is an over head shot of the rear clip.
P1010301.jpg

Then there are those that went to what is referred to as the "Gulf Flares" which were grafted on to make them even wider. I had 295s that just fit under the wells of the car as I received it. Then I went to 325s which stuck outside the wells so the fenders had to widened. These can be ordered from some of the manufacturers already on the cars.

Here it is finished.

There are lots of pics on the forum of each type. Look in the gallery or some of the build threads like Tom's RCR 40 track car where he added the wide track suspension.

I see

So these pictures Ive added here have the thing your talking about added or what?

They look like thats simply how it was made to start with... if ur getting the car made... why not just make it with the rear wider than finishing it off smaller to then re-work on it?

I cant work on stuff like this... Im only begining to learn how to turn bolts and screws so I can work on my own car so I dont trust something like this to ripoff merchan... erm mechanics. So for me this is something I would get made for me and sent to me nicely rapped in a box lol.

I also want to make the car Carbon Fibre as thats lighter/stronger than Fibreglass... can all this still be done with it?

I dont want to make the car Wider than it really is meant to be, so I assume 70" is how wide all replicas are?

Does that 70" include that widened rear for 335-345 Tires I would like to put in there? or does it end up like 75-80" with the widened rear?

The tires on the back of these cars look HUGE, N i like that width... how wide is that? To me it looks beyond 335, I mean Viper tires are 325 or 335 and this looks as big if not bigger.

Btw - I love the rear photo... thats the kinda rear I like yet I noticed that even MK1s seem to have that sort or something slightly different to that? to me that looks BETTER than the new GT rear.

Also - The nice grill looking thing behind the rear screen... when it rains... is that ok to drive even though water is gonna go right through there?

The Gulf flares make the overall width 75 inches.

Since the replica manufacturers offer both normal and Gulf versions, it makes more sense to use molds without the flares and add them in later than to use molds with the flares and remove them. However, if the concern is that you would have to do the work the attach the flares yourself, I believe most if not all will sell you the rear clip with flares already attached.

I also believe that 335s are commonly used when the Gulf flares are.

As far as rain - expect to get wet in side the driver compartment. That way if you don't, it will be a pleasant surprise. The 9 hole vent on the rear deck is what I assume you are talking about. That is there to allow hot air to escape and sits right above the exhaust. Water getting in to the engine bay via that route shouldn't be much of a problem.

huh? is rain poring through?
every gt40 replica or some brands...

Depending on how hard it is raining and how long the car is in it, unless special attention is paid to installing the door eyebrows and properly installing the weather stripping around the door, you can minimize water entry (I am not sure if you can eliminate it completely). The design of the door and how it cuts so deeply into the roof affects how effective weather proofing is.
