New forum section. Need your opinion

For some time now I have noticed that there seems to be a lot of repetitive questions on the forum. I have come up with what I think will not only solve this situation, but will be a valuable resource for all the members no matter where they are in their build, or acquisition(?).
What started me thinking of this was two things. The first was that I was seeing a lot of repetitive question, with both helpful responses, and "use the search function" responses. There have been times that I have tried to find information on the forum that I knew was there, but I couldnot find with the search function. Call me search challenged. So my cure was to save threads and add to them whenever they recieved new post. Do you know how long it takes to gothrough a thread for one piece of information? Well I have over 150 or so threads saved.
The second thing was just after I finally got my used partially built car from an owner in Australia, who had worked on his car for 4 years, and the problems I encountered along the way. I found a lot of pitfalls usually by falling into them. I thought, what if someone had outlined these problems ahead of time. It would have saved me weeks and a few bucks. So I sat down and began chronicling my experience, and that led me to my idea.
What I am proposing is a new section on the forum for "Articles Only". This would be a section where members would write and submit articles to the administrators for posting, or the administrators would would call for authors of titled articles ("Someone to write an article on installing a DIS system", for example). These would be articles that the membership could post to, adding their experiences or information. This would keep the article up to date with the latest or aditional information on the subject. It would be purely articles, so no sidebars or kudos. The articles could be on any subject you feel knowledgeable about. I know there are many guys out there who built or acquired their cars who have valuable information they could contribute (you can't drive your GT40 all the time, or can you?). One thread could be a listing of web sites for parts and supplies (panel adhesives, where to find the best deal on Cleco pliers, etc.) that are not kit dealer based.
This would keep the newbies busy (What do you like about your GT40, purchasing and obtaining a used kit), and the veterans informed of complex problems (relocating the engine for better center of gravity and its associated problems, brake upgrading, etc. etc.)
I have run this passed Ron, and he likes the basic idea. I am sure there will be some problems in its placement or operation within the forum. One problem that I can see right off is the size of the "attached file" button. It may have to be bigger if pictures are included, or the submission will have to be private mail. That's why I am putting this out for your comments and ideas, as I don't mean to be the last word on it. Please take time to post your thoughts.

Seems to have promise. My only concern would be that I'm not sure the forum format is the best way to present such articles. Straight HTML pages or PDF would seem better. Perhaps the main gt40s.com page should not go straight to the forum, but should have a list of links that would take you to articles, the forum, a picture gallery, etc...

But how about we try to come up with a list of potential articles before getting too hung up on the presentation? I propose that "On windage and wet sumps" NOT be one of them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This would be fantastic for me - I start my build from scratch in about 2 months time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I second Steve's idea - let's make a list of articles. Here are a few I KNOW we need:

Audi/Getrag/016 transaxles

Porsche G50 G50/50 914 etc. transaxles

Renault transaxle

ZF transaxle

Importation of kits, rollers, & complete cars

Registration of GT40s

Ron

I thin kwe need a list of available (and out-of-print) references: books on GT40 history (e.g., Spain, Legate, ...) & also technical subjects (handling/suspension, engine building, high-performance driving, ...)

I'd also like to see Gordon Levy's engine building secrets revealed, but I doubt he'd be willing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry but i dont think that last one would be pertinant, do we need a topic titled Ron? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I think another good "article" would be something that is visible all the time that is a request for donations with the contact info there all the time.

I had a look at some of the many threads I have saved and came up with these for some of the topics. They have been discussed, but I think a good article or thread on these subjects would benefit and consolidate the info. for a lot of us.

Fuel system requirements for EFI

Shifters for the Audi, ZF, Renault, and G50 transaxel

Installing a Phantom Grip LSD
or LSD for the Audi, ZF, G50 etc.

Web sites for shop supplies tools and parts

Requirements for relocating the drive train for lower center of gravity etc.

What I like (and don't) about the RF, GTD, DRB, Tornado, ERA etc. or, what made me choose that brand

Installation and requirements of a DIS unit

Requirements and setup of Weber carbs.

High performance driving schools, where are they and how much do they cost

Suspension geometry, initial setup and/or track settings

Paint color codes

Web sites for quick release steering kits and their requirements/performance

How to go about buying a used GT40 or kit

Shipping and importation of a used kit

Fire extinguisher choices and setup

Reference readings

Insurance for the kit car; who, where, and how much

Sound deadening and insulation

Conversion from right hand drive to LHD

These are just some that picked my interest.

I really like hte idea of doing this, something sort of like the DYI Forum but more focused. We'll probably roll the DYI Forum into this new one.

Now, it will need a moderator. I cannot do it due to time limitations. The moderator needs to be computer savvy - comfortable with uploading attachments, pictures, making pdfs, etc. Should be someone who will be around a good while and can be netural. If someone from the GTD Club would do it maybe they'd be open to putting some of the old technical articles up from scans. They've got more knowledge over there than we do over here due to their club organization and long history.

Ron,

I've got the time and the appropriate software (adobe, etc.). I know I'm new around here but I plan to stay. I've never built a 40, but I've restored a few cars (multiple Mustangs, Vette's, and an old XKE). If no one more qualified wants the job, I'd love to help out. I think this would be a great way to teach myself the "GT40 craft". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ron,

This sounds like a good idea. I have seen other sites that have a virtual "library" you can access for info. Perhaps the current moderators can nominate existing, relevant threads to the new moderator for this area. I suggest it be called the "GT 40 reference library" or some such thing.

Sort of a higher powered FAQ area. High performance info for high performance cars....

That is a lot of work. I think we can do just as well by having the articles exist as posts, or posts that link to a PDF. The topics can be controlled by moderation.

I've already started to get this rolling by converting the "DIY Forum" to a FAQ forum. The DIY was a good idea but it doesn't get much activity at all, less than a handful of posts in 1.5 years.

I have a question now that we are starting. How will we post the actual articles. Do we write them in Word for example, cut and paste to the post or will it be the attached file method. I am not sure how to progress as I have one or two articles ready.
Thanks

Bill

I'm going to be looking at similar sights for a little direction.. I'm a member of several Mustang and Land Rover forums, so I'll take what like about all of them and try to blend them together. I personally would like sections that you can view as a webpage plus offer pdf download for convenient local storage and printing... nothing worse than a web page that won't print right.

Ron,

I'll email you today to get the details about everything. Since we're so close, I'd love to take a gander at your project. Thanks for your trust,

Shannon

Bill, Steve, and DeadLast,

You guys have the knowledge and should talk about getting this rolling. I'm pretty sure DeadLast has the tech necessary and you fellows know the material. Converse if possible. I'm off but a little trip again, but I'll be back soon and can help get things going. Best,
Ron

Bill will you be able to work with LastDesdLast on the FAQ portion of the site? It was your idea and he can provide the web tools to get it done.
