Yes Al, just as striking someone outside a bar or striking your spouse, striking childeren or anyone for that matter will get you arrested. You prefer the good old days where slapping the wife and kits around was no problem?
Al does your list sound like it came from someone with "pride of country"? But then you always did have a problem with hypocracy!
Al, are you OK with Scientology, Muslums and Rastafarians putting up displays in public parks?
As for suing parents, child abuse is not new, unlike the "good old days" where we just kept quiet, now childeren have rights and recourse.
Al you say "teachers can't reprimand children", realy? Tearches can "reprimand" all they want, but unlike the "good old days" beating kids with rulers has gone the way of wife beating, no longer acceptable.
Al, in this thread about childeren and guns, your concern is childeren bringing pot to school?
Al, do you know why some schools need cops and metal detectors, is it because of Pot?

We have had a taste of this in recent years with teachers being stabbed and generally abused by both students and parents.

Violent crime is way down, murder rate is way down, the abortion rate is at a 30 year low, divore rate is down as are drunk driving deaths, high school graduation rates are up, as are the rate of College admissions, in almost every way Society is better.

First of all my parents never "struck" me. I did get a spanking when I deserved it. I don't condone and did not say anything about spousal abuse.
I am very proud of this country, we don't have to apologize to anyone.
Kids suing parents is ridiculous.
Kids should be suing the Government for the debt they've made.
Kids don't respect teacher or their elders anymore, are kids even kept after school?
This thread isn't about guns and children, it's about cap guns and playing.
We have cops in schools because kids watch violent movies and play violent video games and have dulled their senses to what the real consequences of violence is.
Can you talk about this without attacking me or anyone else?

Jim, are you able to leave the keys in the ignition of your unlocked car, are you able to leave your house unlocked? Do children show the same respect to you they as they did in the 60's?
Are you able to walk your streets at night without fear of being mugged? Are there more unwed mothers, do gangs rule some part of your city.
Do more children graduate because exams are things of the past? Do more women have children by different fathers? Do more people just partner up rather than get married?

If that were true, we would expect the rate of violent crime to start increasing just as violent video game became available.

Violent crime started to decline in 1994? You may want to speak to the residents of Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans, Los Angeles, etc. All gun free areas too!

As a kid, I know we didn't have door locks on the house, the car was never locked. When I was 21, I saw my HS shop teacher Mr. Larsen at the bar. I addressed him as "Mr. Larsen", he said I didn't have to call him that anymore, I could call him Ed. I told him that I called him Mr. Larsen out of respect, were he still alive, I would still call him Mr. Larsen. Kids aren't taught respect anymore.

I minored in Sociology, this very thing was one something we looked at...
Perception is the answer to you question.
Its obvious that you and many others here are absolutly positive that things are "degenerating" that everything is bad and getting worse?
How can that be when every meaningful investigation and statistic shows just the opposit?
Here is why:
When my generation was growing up with few exceptions the "news" concerning crime was local, for the most part if it didn't happen on the Peninsula it had to be a fairly big deal to get covered in the local paper or the local 1/2 hour news shows.
The Networks did National/World news, but it had to be a firly big deal for a crime story to be heard.
Over the last 30-40 years, as you know that has changed. The Media discovered a truism, people are interested is the sorid details of any crime, anywhere: "If it bleads, it leads".....became standard for ALL news outlets.
Today we are bombarded with crime after crime, the worse the crime the more coverage. Its from all over the world, but is does not seem that way.
People say: It certinally seems like crime is out of control, its all I hear about.....

To answer your question if you leave your key in the car, statisticly you would be less likely to have it stolen today.
My Daughter/Grandaughter live down the street, their friends show at least as much respect as we did, probably more, there was that 60's thing.
Statisticly wou would be safer walking the streets at night today, I know you dont think so because of all the crime you hear about but when comparing statistics you are much safer.

I'm tempted to ask to see your statistics but I won't. Suffice to say the reason I lock my car and my house today, is a wrong perception bought on by the media only reporting crime, as is my fear that I may be mugged if I walk certain parts of my city alone.
And when I hear teenagers talking on the bus loudly and every second word is f##k and c#nt that is because of the respect they have been taught for their elders.
How misguided I am. Thank you for your sociological input, I feel safer and more respected already.
