Photos of historic GT40s

Does any of you know a website where they have many historic photos from the original GT40s that raced in the sixties? For the moment I am not really interested in modern pictures from historic events. I would like to see which original version and colour I like best. So far I haven't decided yet between later MkI with the wider rear or MkII.

Thanks.

John

Thanks Tim,

I already went through some books like Ford versus Ferrari, American Racing, and American Pro Sport Series, but the number of GT40s in there is very disappointing. I do have some car magazines lying around, but I will need a whole week to go through them to score maybe a couple of pictures.

Are we allowed to put scans from magazines from the sixties in the gallery?

Ronnie Spains book and Trevor Legates book have good pictures but from that era many are black and white. Good for atmosphere etc but rubbish for chossing a colour scheme!

John,

Have you read the book "the Ford That beat Ferrari" ? ...about £50 - £60 from amazon. This book contains hundreds of colour photos of GT40's and is a must for anybody looking to builds a replica based on the 1960's cars.

No, I haven't.
I have seen the book and last week I visited the car bookshop I usually buy from, but it was on back order. In 1986 I started collecting Ferrari books and car magazines that had an article on Ferrari, but ever since I started racing myself slowly but surely my focus has been widened to more than just Ferrari. So during the last couple of years I started buying books on different makes (always motorsport related) or motorsport in general.
In total I have over 7,000 car magazines (English, German and Dutch) starting from 1948, but still always on the look out for old copies of Autosport and Motorsport. Maybe I will have to go through Supercar Classics and Classic and Sportscar for some nice articles on the history of the GT40. Thing is once you start going through these magazines you end up reading the better articles or captions and before you know it another couple of hours have passed. What a hobby we have.

Hi John,
Try here:
NVSAAC - GT40 Main Picture Gallery

Lots of pics of originals on the track.

So I went through all that and it is very close between the MkII and the 1969 MkI. I think the line of the 1969 MkI is purer than that of the MkII. It looks good from any angle. As for the livery I prefer some of the 1965 paintschemes and colours.

I presume both RCR and MDA do the MkI with the wider rear section of the 69 model and that they can be fitted on a GTD.

John

PS. Any more sites with historic pics?
