Porsche 928 5ltr V8 and transmission into a GT40

Has anyone looked at Porsche power in a GT40 please? I ask because Porsche 928s are getting very cheap now.5 Litre 32 Valve V8 engines (320 BHP)can be had for around £1500.Whole cars from £2000! 928 Engine is front mounted but their transmission already sits over rear axle.I think these engines are reasonably light and are certainly tough.(Pushes the 928 to 165MPH and they're not exactly light cars!). Also, has anyone looked at other 928 donor parts i.e.four pot calipers,discs/rotors,Huge radiators etc.Just a thought.Does anyone think the engine fitment is do-able please?

Wow.

That is a really interesting question.

My first reaction is why would you want to anything bout a Ford engine in it? However, Ford is anything but sacrosant.

It answers alot of questions affoardably. Plus you may be able yo pick up a transaxle from an Audi - or something like that - for a fairly inexpensive price. (Like $200.) And, I don't think you will need to purchase an adapter. They should mate up pretty well. The price of repairs will go up though. Porsches is not cheap cars to work on. Ford is usually.

I wish I knew more about the chassis of the GT40 to intelligently answer that. Maybe some one with experience building the GT40 replicas might be better to answer that.

The 928 is on of the cheapest cars to buy and one of the most expensive to own. While the car is strong, parts are very expensive because of limited availablity. I am not sure about mounting the engine to the transaxel. I seem to remeber the clutch is in the rear and the engine was purpose built for a torque tube. But it is an intriging idea.

I think, but cannot remember for sure, that this transmission is like the 944. That is, it uses a torque tube to transfer power to the tranny. The clutch is actually up on the engine, so the transmission has no bellhousing or other provisions for clutch mounting. Can anyone confirm?

Ron, your correct about the 944 - the clutch was at the engine. The transmission was taken from Audi with the bell housing. I have been looking for the 928 information. Only thing I found was with the auto (M-B) the torque converter was at the engine.

Arthur,

The 928 uses a torque tube to connect the engine / clutch to the gearbox / diff. There is no facility for a clutch in the gearbox bellhousing and even with the fitting of a hydraulic release bearing than there is the problem of fitting the clutch and operating it with no recoginised spline.

The 944 is very similar and has no clutching facility. I have been there and it is not that simple ( if only things were ).

I also agree with the most expensive to maintain but a good news story, the bearings used in the Audi box are CHEAPER to buy as Porsche spares than Audi spares, same bits !!!!!

Keep the faith and the Windsor.

Best wishes,

Robert
