SLCs take pole and third in NASA 25 hour classic qualifying

The Davidson Racing Eagle (a modified Superlite SLC) took the ES class pole yesterday at Thunderhill for the 25 hour race starting today.

Second was the Flying Lizard Audi R8LMS, and third was the Quick Racing Products Superlite SLC.

All three cars were within about 2 seconds of each other; the 4th place car (Porsche 997 Cup) was about 6 seconds off the pole pace.

Live timing is available at Live Timing NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill | USAF 25 Hours Of Thunderhill

** The headline should have emphasized that the pole and third were in the ES class, not overall. The text was correct **

That's a shame - it's saying it's not available to me...

The message you posted is because the race hasn't started yet. It begins in the morning on the West coast of the USA-- then you'll be able to see it.

Ah, OK thanks but was mainly looking for the complete qualifying data..

9am PT, QRP superlight 24 laps behind P1 (flying lizard R8 Audi) and overall in 2nd place. Raining with about a hour to 1 1/2 of rain left. Superlight can run with the Audi in the dry but the Audi has all kinds of electronic driving aids like traction control and antilock brakes that make it faster in the wet.

Go Superlight!

Race done. P1= Flying Lizard Audi A8 , P2= QRP SLC, P3= Prototype Development Group GTM

A bit less than 700 laps total with the last 8-10 hours on a wet track. Margin of victory between P1 and P2 35 laps. The Audi never stopped to fix anything, no laps lost to long stops, all pro drivers and quicker in the wet because of modern electronic grip stuff.

The QRP guys ran their best over all race here IMHO. Never behind the wall, stops for gas, driver changes, brake pads, and tires. Minor contacts and kept on the track pretty much. Very good race. Just maybe if it had been dry ......... (remember the SLC out qualified the Audi)................well there's always a maybe isn't there. They really held up the SLC flag high and made a great show for themselves against profession teams.

REALLY GOOD JOB GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't do videos where I am - no bandwidth in the RV Park... Grrr....

How many other cars are their with similar power to weight ratios and aerodynamics?
Or is this another case of the SL-C turning a sword fight into a gun-fight?

The Flying Lizard Audi is a 2014 R8 LMS, which is a helluva lot different from an A8. The QRP SLC got beat by a serious race car driven by professionals on a team with significant financial backing, not by some full-sized luxury sedan.

No not at all Randy........The other D sports type cars (3 or 4) are quite a bit faster because they are a 1000 pounds lighter. One was a V8 radical, and two at least had 400+HP. The other SLC has been rumored to have spend +$1000000 on the car with a full on Rolex powertrain in it.

The fastest car in the race (didn't finish) was a NORMA with a 500hp BMW 1200 pound sports prototype that was at least 4 to 5 sec a lap faster with none other than Al Unser Jr at the wheel. There was a real deal PI ALMS Le Mans prototype in the race and at least 2 Daytona 24 hour experienced GT2-3 Porsches. Even a Trans Am quality Camaro that was really fast. That thing shook the ground when it went by.

This is a case of a Simi amateur (I say that with all due respect because these guys are not amateur talented) group of guys that have just beat many much better funded Profession teams and did it with real class.

More like a nicely handed broadsword in a bring what to want (including guns) fight.

Note: Mark is correct Pro R8 not a A8........my mistake

Howard knows it was not an A8, he just mistyped it or something.

The Ginetta P1 car was a full on LeMans Prototype. It tried to take down a tire wall just as we were leaving yesterday, lots of expensive carbon in the back of tow trucks after that one. This year there was a noticeable up tick in the quality (expense) of the cars entered. Besides the Eagle (which broke very early), Norma, Flying Lizard Audi R8, Wolf, V8 Radical, Mazda Proto cars there was the previously mentioned Ginetta P1 (had to be the most expensive car there).

Another new car was this -
Who we are
Really hot looking.

Unfortunately those Mazda Prototype things, look way too on the preggo guppy side for my tastes.

CONGRATS!!!! to Ted, Don and Cary for another job well done. Second overall against that crowd is an accomplishment to be proud of.
