Tom, there is another interesting thread on the forum about oil pump flows, and what the engine is happy with vs what the oil pump actually flows. Race engine builders reckon most engines are happy with only 5-10 GPM, at a pressure of only 50psi (or possibly even lower). Anything more than that (which is usually quite a bit) goes over the relief/bypass valve in the pump.
Later this summer (or early fall) I'll be on an engine dyno with a 4.0l Lexus V8 motor, and will have an external electric oil pump and some datalogging equipment setup to measure its flow, PSI, kW required, etc.
I may also take the opportunity to rig up the OEM oil pump on the electric motor and run it in isolation to see what it actually puts out vs various RPM's and back pressures. This is all data that, AFAIK, doesn't get published anywhere in service manuals or hotrodding books, but I think would be very interesting and useful to have. Ditto with cooling pumps.
