Are you talking about the driving light wells below the headlights?

That looks like one of the oldies, I had a plastic model of a very early car as a kid and I think I remember that as signals.

I never noticed it before now. It looks pretty dark in there with no reflective qualities - It may well have been being used for a brake cooling duct.

It is very clearly an indicator light in the photo illustrated in the second link in post 6 above.
The light recess also has clear perspex cover.
