Yes my name really is Ford and what is a ZX40?

I figured I might as well throw it out there to be chewed on. I've found a body that has never been set on a chassis or built in any way. I'd like to place it on a Nissan '87 300 zx chassis, as I have several lying around. Yes, it is front engine, yes it is a Nissan. Yes it will fit (I think). I have two wheelbase models to choose from. The 2 + 2 is set at 98 inches and the 2 seater is at 91 inches.
At one time I was going to put a Bradley on it but after seeing the GT40, ????

Question, as long as I don't modify the body and stay within the "character" of the kit, will this platform offend the purists?

I feel as long as the body is preserved and the car will promote the GT40 in a positive way, all the better.

Finally, I think I'll go with the 98 inch wheelbase and fudge the extra 3 in.

All feedback is appreciated.

P.S. I've just completed work on a Ginetta so I can build.

IIRC, the 300ZX series I had a pretty long snout. I
don't think the GT40 body will fit too well. You might
have better luck with the series II 300ZX.

Regardless, using a front engine donor to replicate a
mid engined car - sounds like the old VW based kits
that replicated MGs, Mercedes, Jags and the like.
Asking if the platform will offend the purists - well,
if you put a Chevy in a correct mid engined platform,
or even a 4 cylinder, you're going to offend the purists

I'd look at it long and hard (and I'm not referencing teh
"Babes in Toyland" thread /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) before I set to work. I
think you'llbe in for a big surprise getting it to work.

I know it's probably not what you want to hear, but it is a question that frequently occurs.. could I make this body fit this chasis?.. Most of the recognised " experts" in the field all advise selling/swaping/donating other donor projects to enable you to fund putting body and chassis/spaceframe together as designed, rather than trying to adapt differing items together. It can make an already complicated job much more difficult if not nigh on impossible /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. ( N.B. If you are determined to do it then good for you, and I'm sure you will receive as much help as is possible on this forum.. I hear those Nissan engines respond particulary well to NOS!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Well, pick up the shell last night. Seems I have a Kellison GT40(K). So I probably won't be offending to many people if I drop it onto a Nissan.

Not really. Many owners of original cars, Cobras and GT40s alike, have replicas that they use for drivers/racers. For less money they can get better performance and not risk their investment or collection car. Makes very good sense, and given that the modern group of purpose built replicas is in many ways much better than originals it is not only economical but offers a strong incentive to do so.

and I know certain people who build a brand new machine which is a clone of the original but much stronger , transfer the chassis plate and race with it purporting to be an original because replicas are not allowed. Meanwhile, the original is sat in a lock up somewhere in Europe. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hey Jeff,

Have a blast making it all work! I have pissed off the purists from day 1: Momo steering, pedals and shifter/boot; racing seats (rather than brass grommet slings); stock EEC-IV EFI; mirrors not on front clip between fuel cap and windscreen and Vitaloni Californians at that; Porsche transaxle(made by Getrag so I've learned) [although I don't know what makes a Renault any better :-D just kidding lads!] ; any number of things I am surely leaving out. The bottom line is do your thing; the vintage racing associations won't let us race anyway, no matter how much of a purist you are at heart! (well, unless you are sneaky enough as Dave pointed out or you've got $0.5Million to give to Lee Holman-has he sold any cars yet?) When you get a chance, keep us up to date with your project too.

Regards,
Lynn

What the hell, build what you want. It's your money and time. I would keep in mind resale value if thats important to you. If you put too much money into it, I could really get this thread going if I put a number on it, you really could be left holding the bag. But if you keep it light and put a lot of power in it, it will be fun no matter what.
