Original bits?

I know some people aren't too hung up on authenticity, and that's fine. People should build what they want. For others, however, authenticity is a big factor, and I've noticed over time a number of queries regarding what parts came from which donor car. With over 600 people on the forum now we should be able to get some authoritative answers. Perhaps it's time to add a seperate thread? Anyway, here are my contributions, and I will not be offended if I've got some of them wrong and someone corrects me - that's what this is all about. Anyone with more knowledge, please fill in the gaps, or add to the list.

MKI Tail lights - Simca 1000
MKII Tail ligts - '63 Chev Corvair
MKI Indicator lights - Austin A30
Demister grille - MKIII Zephyr

Washer nozzle - Rover 3L
Wiper Motor - MKIII Zephyr, Rover 3L (Boeing 707 on some MKII's and MK IV)
Wiper rack and wheelbox - MKII Jaguar
Wiper arm - Triumph 2500 MKII
Door Latches - MK VII Jaguar or MKI Ford Escort
Some Smiths gagues were used in Cortina GT and Lotus Cortina.
Rear view mirror - Rover 3L, Rover 2000
Fliud reservoirs - Early Austin?
Eyeball vents - Escort or Cortina?
Rocker switches (MKIII) - ?
Toggle switches - MKI & MK II - ?
Indicator lever - ?
etc, etc, etc.

Brain,
Absolutly brilliant thread! I must admit
my ignorance on the Parts of this cars. This is a wealth of helpful info that undoubtly will help many in the future for finding replacements. I Sure hope that others follow suit and add to the list. I for one will be printing this for future reference.

Thanks again!

I will make a FAQ and place this thread into that catagory. Articles are welcome in the FAQ too, but I will monitor it closely and kick out anything not very important for that area.

I am sorry but I think that the above lists are doubtfull for original parts, some of the donor vehicles suggested did not exist in the time frame alone. I fully agree that a difinitive list of parts would be of great interest and help, but it must be right. Of course, like a lot of other similar cars built in that era, they used what parts were available at the time, and often no two cars were exactly the same, but there will become a consensus as the list evolves. BTW, the interior mirror on most cars was Aston Martin. Frank

Brian,

Excelent! Excelent! Excelent!
What about other mechanical parts?, eg, water pumps, brakes, steering column, etc.

This information will be of great value to the people that plan to build a mild street car, from standard parts available in the junk jards instead of highperformance-special ones.

This list has been compiled by Ken Saunders and I took it from http://www.gt40club.clara.net/technics.htm#Parts so his is the credit. Is intended to provide help to source parts for those building the KVA Ford GT40 replica and will probably be of use to those building other kits.

Please, fell free to add or correct anything, as we all know that there is more than one source for everything.

Rear fog lights (Shaped to fit rear valance) Lex Ford Part No: FD1595784
Front side lights and/or rear reversing lights Unipart Part No: GAL167A

Fiesta Mk2 - Includes side light but not quite square
Rear tail, stop and turn light units - Fiat 850S
Leather covering for dash panel etc - Upholsterers
Steering Rack Ford Cortina - will probably need 1/2" cut off each end.(Best)
Ford Escort - needs extending.
Front uprights, hubs, disks and calipers. Ford Granada Mk 2. or specailist supplier
Suggest that better brakes are fitted ~12inch diameter four pots. (AP Racing or Wilwood)

Suggest that better brakes are fitted ~ 12inch diameter four pots.(AP Racing or Wilwood)

The flywheel need re-drilling to suit the V8 crankshaft and togther with the crankshaft, rods, pistons and clutch will require dynamic balancing.
Clutch - Depends on power output - Renault 21/25 turbo up to about 200BHP
AP Racing CP2394-14 clutch cover. CP2583 Drive Plate with Renault 21 spline
centre. CP3457-2 Thrust Race.
Gearchange mechanism - Rod linkage with two universal joints running through rose joints similar to that used on the original GT40 is best.

Transaxle - Renault 20, 21, 25, 30, GTA or Alpine. - Citreon or Audi - Renault 21
for higher power use Porsche 930 or G50 transaxle or Hewland
Automatic gearboxes - Audi 2.2 litre 5 cylinder front wheel drive.
Renault 21 Turbo is the favoured unit as it has the 3.44:1 differential and is cheapest to obtain.
Radiator - approximately 24" x 12"(15" Maximum)

Point taken Frank. The eyeball vents, for example, can't have been from the Escort as the MK I Escort didn't have eyeballs, only the MK II. They therefore must be from the MKI Cortina, or possibly the MK II Cortina?

The list supplied by Javier (from Ken Saunders) applies to GTD/KVA kits and as such does not really reflect original items in many cases. It is, however, a useful list for all kit builders.

Indicator lights on MK III - MG 1100

I agree with Frank. The Xavier/Saunders list is far from correct for many items but will get you on the road.
Tempus Fugit is the problem for many who try to source original parts and the number of 40s being produced now far outstrips the original pieces still surviving!!
Frank is correct about the interior mirror being in Astons but it is the same as the Jaguar. The critical point is the support stem which was bonded to the windscreen and not to the roof.
Regards to all.
GTA.

Very few parts was used, as is from "other cars".
the majority was used from special orders.
But of course a lot of the same suppliers were used.
On special orders.
At time, design or parts were of course used to make up a GT40 part.
As they were to be specific and expensive.
And of very latest spec..

The whole, at least the majority of the british car industry got their parts from about the same suppliers.
If not in house.
(sold abroad as well...)
These were often choosen from the range of the supplier.
Or were ordered, but many parts fit´s a lot of different cars.
Many parts were related...

But the GT programme also got smaller companies building them parts, wich quite often were not even connected to car industry etc...(as a supplier..)

But many parts looks similiar and can be used or even altered.
Happy hunting !

Gentlemen, this is the deal:

If you send me the source of any part for the GT40, does not matter if they are original or not, I will compile them in a nice way (excel or access) so we can create a database of reference very useful for anyone.

Best regards,

Javier

Probably very few.
Most of these companies are British, who can tell us those that are not? A Blue Peter badge for the first correct answer!!!!

At least one of the companies Paul lists, and who supplied Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough where the original cars were built, is C O H Baines and Co. which is owned and run by GTD owner Robin Batt, and the company still produce the same rubber mouldings as supplied to FAV in the 60s

I thought the fuel pumps were made by Stewart-Warner, which is not a British company either. Weren't there some adverts that mentioned SW pumps?

Dunlop not British in the sixties ?

I think not although I cannot swear where the tyres were moulded

Same applies to Lockheed I suspect

Can I just add what a wonderful thread this is !
