Caliper brackets Ally needed.

I'm upgrading my brake setup and need to get some alluminium blocks to make brackets from. Anyone know where I can buy some - pref close to West London. I'm thinking a hard grade of Ally is best to go with - any input appreciated.

I can't tell you how cool that is....

I've been shopping at Discount Steel and Aluminum here in Minneapolis for many years now and never knew they had a website until now! :)

What's really nice is to be able to shop in their "Drop Bins" where you get scraps cut off large sheets etc at a substantially reduced rate..

Another place you can Web-Shop is McMaster-Carr McMaster-Carr .... They have a TON of stuff including every fastener imaginable..

My brake guru told me, when I come to machine up my hats, to use 2024-T4 or 7075-T651 or 2017-T451. Do NOT use 6061. Don't ask me the whys or wherefores! I believe it's something to do with the heat cycles. There will be a metallurgical guy somewhere on here who can fill in the blanks in my knowledge for you, I'm sure. I'm going to run with the 7075. HTH

Paul,
Rallydesign supply simple aluminium blocks for radial calipers that can be drilled to suit.
Hispec supply nice finished brackets for their calipers.
Maybe you can adapt from these.
If you buy the raw material you must use a high quality and strong alloy, so do go with Russ's options or equivalent.

McMaster Car is great for nuts and bolts and hard to find stuff. Usually ships out same day. Metal stock on the other hand they are not so good. I ordered a piece of tubing about two weeks ago and it is still not here. I received the rest of the order within 2 days.

6061 would probably be strong enough unless you went really all out on the engineering/ design and wanted it light as possible (smallest amount of material)

that said the 2024 or 7075 is considerably stronger (and more $) so better safety margin

2024 is somewhat more heat resistant than 7075

7075 is somewhat stronger than 2024
