A tale of two cities...

I repeat have no idea who Glen Beck is.

I have not quoted Glen Beck in this (my) thread.

I was not attacking your country.

We often put up with silly attacks on the UK but we ignore them because we’re all grown up.

I called your country racist as that was my experience living in Alabama for 6 years.

You explained that things had moved on – I accept your statement.

You have a history of misreading posts on here and turning them into a personal political agenda.

I repeat, I do not understand US politics nor do I know any of the major players except BOB and Sarah Palin who appears to have but just one single brain cell, and should always appear in public with pom poms and a baton.

I give up. I leave the field to you. You win but remember, you know you had anger issues a couple of years ago and your wife recommended that you stay away from politics and religion when you were new to “this Internet thing”.

Say Hi to Mrs Craik for me.

Me? A Jerk? Are you sure mate?

For everyone else I cannot continue this any longer but before I depart this is what Craik himself said over 2 years ago. It seems he is not following his own committment or his good wife's sound advice.

OMG. I tried to refrain from posting in this thread, but here I go again....!!!

Not wishing to take sides here, but having read through it all twice why did I bother?), the only point I wish to make is that blind defence of ones country must surley be ultimately flawed. Jim, you suggest that if anyone critisizes your country, you are bound to defend it, as anyone would? Unless I read you incorrectly. Surely, you must realize that the US as with perhaps every other country in the world, there is much to critisize. Just because the critisism comes from 'Johnny Foreigner', does not necessitate you to automatically jump to the defence of your great nation?

And again I find myself reading through posts made by people quoting other people to make their points. LAME. I aim this next load of bollox at anyone and everyone. Make your own points and stand by what you say. Stop quoting other idiots to support you. Carry the arguement on your own, or don't engage in it.

Mark,

You are absolutly right, blind defence of any country is very flawed!

Heaven knows that the US has many many flaws, I and others dicuss and criticize it often.

I have no problem with that.

What has been going on here, is that Mr Hardy has posted attack after attack, making general statments like "You Americans........thum in bum, mind in neutral"

He calls us one of the most racist countries in the world (we have a Black President).

Then he starts thread like this one, not part of a discussion, just out of the blue. He posts photos from a Glenn Becks rant about how America has been screwed by big Government.

He says that he has no idea who Glenn Beck is but that crap, he quoted him in another attack on Americans. Additionally he used the exact same mislabeled photos of Yokohoma, and Detroit that Glen Beck called Hiroshima.

Then he says this was just a story about "victors and spoils" but thats not true.

His first few comments about these photos being "illuminating and disturbing" and a "compelling comparison" show this had nothing to do with Victors and spoils, this was another hit piece about our Govenment.

Japanese Government, good........................

US big Government bad.......................just look at what big Government did to America.....

Mark,

If this was a part of a discussion I'm OK with that, I would disagree but that happens in a discussion.

If it was an ocasional interesting though, sometimes good, sometimes bad, I'm OK with that.

But this was just one more, out of the blue, unprevoked, unfair, missleading attack by someone who than claims:

"I do not understand US politics"......................................apparently no understand does not stop polorised one sided hit peices.

I'm sorry, but I have had enough.

Mark, what would say to someone who out of the blue, not part of a discussion, posted one sided, always negative, missleading posts about your country?

I don't know why these threads get sidetracked so quickly. Fault on both sides (myself included) I'm sure.

On this one, Jim was simply posting a thought in response to the OP's pictures. And he made a valid point, that type of comparison picture doesn't really tell you anything.

And yet here is where we ended up...

To put the record straight.

I have apologised for the misleading location photographs. The photographs only serve to illustrate a sad but ironic true fact regarding the so-called "winners" in War. Pyrrhic victory came to my to mind when I saw the photographs. Point to the "negative one-sided" comments in my post please. Point to my attack on the USA in my post please.

I fear you have connected my post with some political rant of which I am unaware and you have openly called me a liar. That is not nice.

Welcome Mr Young, I wondered where you were.

"Mark, what would say to someone who out of the blue, not part of a discussion, posted one sided, always negative, missleading posts about your country?"

Probably nothing Jim. If keiths' screenshot of a post you made in the past is true, I would tend to aline myself with your wife's point of view. In that you can't change other people's minds for them. If they happen to think badly of the UK, well, that's a shame. But I can live with it.

This is the tactic of some of the responders on this board. You can't dispute the fact that Detroit is a city in ruins. They are giving houses away. Hiroshima is a beautiful, bustling city.

The 100 pound gorilla here is that Detroit has suffered under decades of liberal/union leadership and crumbled under the weight.

Not much to defend here, so you need to pick on the details, "the picture is of Yokohama." So what. There's a million pictures of Hiroshima that are just as impressive.

And the discussion swerves off the road, the perfect Board Nazis tactic.

Admit it craik, you aren't defending America, you are defending your left wing agenda.

Consevative insisted that we let GM and Chrysler fail, costing hundreds of thousands of jobs and totally destroying Detroit!

Saving those great American Companies is an agenda I am proud to defend!

Report: Michigan gross domestic product enjoyed 6th-best increase in U.S. last year

By Meghana Keshavan, June 5, 2012:
Michigan’s gross domestic product last year enjoyed the sixth-highest growth among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to a report released today by the Bureau of Economic Analysis at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Tell us again about Detroit and Liberal leadership!

GDP per person, per Country as of 2011:

US............$48,387
Japan........$34,740

Tell us again about Liberal leadership.

The Silicon Valley is the number 1 economic area in the country. Tell us again about Liberal leadership.

"Washington— Wayne County has the nation's second-highest unemployment rate at 11 percent among major metropolitan regions, the Labor Department reported Wednesday.

The report also found that Metro Detroit has the highest unemployment rate among all regions of Michigan. Metro Detroit has shed 308,000 jobs since May 2008.

The Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn division is behind only Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale, Calif., which is at 11.1 percent, among the 34 metropolitan divisions in the nation's 11 largest areas.

So you really want to talk Detroit unemployment rate and who to blame.......OK lets look!

The unemployment rate in Detroit is still way to high, but the liberal leadership is making great gains.

Detroit's unemployment rate rose steadily under Republicans. The highest point on this Detroit unemployment chart is when Obama was elected, after that the unemployment rate has steadily dropped. Tell us again about Liberal leadership!!! We can't afford another Republican administration.

Detroit unemployment rate 2007 to present

And so it goes on...

It is really between Bob Fechter and Jim Craik. It always has been unfinished business between them. Bob makes a comment on a post I made, and there's Jim - always. Perhaps it's because an erection is just just around the corner?

It is about the curious half life (to me as a foreigner) of US politics which is why I don't get involved.

Mr Hardy,

Everything here was calm and peaceful, until you posted mislabled, misleading photos! You alone posted photos of the worst part of Detroit.

Sir, you alone started this!!

You say you don't get involved, that is BULLSHIT!!!!!!

If you do not want to get involved, then don't get involved.

"And so it goes" My ass!

And you just had to chime in with your two pennyworth. You just couldn't help yourself could you?

I apologised for any misleading labels for the photos. Personally I do not know one end of a Japanese City from the slum holes of Detroit (but I do now, thanks for the education)

You seem to be becoming very enraged and personal and I fear for your health. I don't know how old you are but you should try and chill mate, and if you are really trendy (Like most people from the Bay Area) you should chillax dude.

I salute your willingness to defend your country - it's something we don't as a rule do ourselves lest it be construed as jingoism or somesuch and as one of your compatriots mentioned on here recently

Ouch!

Poor old Charley Farley, he was as nonplussed and perplexed as all of us when he got that. But fair play, as an outspoken person he perhaps could have been forgiven for being indignant, but he simply ignored it - probably the best thing.

Jim, I'll tell you one thing, your doggedness must have stood you in good stead in the Armed Forces - what unit were you in? I hope it was the infantry - they are the guys that never give up and get things done. I rose to the dizzy heights of Corporal, who I like to think are the backbone of any Army. My mother wanted me to be an officer, but I never fancied being amongst the chinless wonders so I volunteered as an ordinary footslogger, albeit in an elite regiment, now sadly amalgamated beyond recognition. Plus my school record was less than exemplary and in the British Army, success at school if you want to enter as a hofficer is mandatory.

Well it's been nice chatting and i must go, but please work on your clairvouyant skills, as I fear they have let you down badly.

So, say hi to SWiMBO. She sounds like a very clever lady.

PS Do you drink? I've made a nice vegetable curry (don't eat a lot of meat) and I am going to open a bottle of Gevery Chambertin, Premier Cru.

I know the snobs say you should drink red wine with meat, but with curry, I think you need a fairly robust red wine to cut through the spice.

Yum yum.

Not Seasonally Adjusted -

I appreciate the concern, but I'm just fine. I'm a laid back kind of guy. I really enjoy a good debate, unfortunately good debates are hard to find.

In the absence of a good debate, I'll go with this one :)

Mr Fechter, I thought you wanted to discuss Detroits unemployment rate and who to blame?
