Del's Build: SLC IR/8

There's a big difference in lifestyles from LA to CA! I agree, you need a place close to you so you can do it when you have time, although dedicating time in Louisiana to do it you may get more done since you're out there only to visit and work on the car.

True. Can you post more videos to your youtube? your build is insane.

Here's the first drive videos, don't know why I didn't combine them. Took me a bit to figure out why it kicks up so much dust when I drove off, may have been a negative for dumping it through he diffuser, lol.

I have a walk around from yesterday after I dipped the wheels bright aluminum. I just need to trim and upload it. Will post more pics on here in a bit.

Also had mention I already got randomly recorded on my 2nd drive! After making a trip around the neighborhood, a kid couple roads over must have heard/saw me and on my way back he was outside with his phone videoing. Luckily for me the car didn't start surging and stall while he was recording, lol!

Looks Very Bruce Wayne. Congratulations

Thanks! My driveway is more of a parking lot, lol. You'd be amazed how long it took to train family to not park right in front of the garage when we had them all over.

Whole plan for the driveway was to make it as easy as possible to enter and exit the SLC bay, driving in or backing in. Just happy I finally get to use it, although UPS and USPS probably appreciate being able to just turn around when dropping packages off, lol.

Initial inspection of the SLC went smooth, although was a little disappointed he didn't seem impressed by the SLC. I'll be off to Baton Rouge tomorrow and when I text the trooper the rejection paperwork after I leave there he'll start on his paperwork and schedule another visit out here. In the meantime to register the car I'll "trailer" the SLC to the nearest inspection station to fail.....for....you guessed it, no registration. Then back to Baton Rouge for, hopefully, last time to pay taxes. Then wait for them to mail everything to the Troop and he comes out a 3rd time to verify VIN placement and hand me my info. Then I get to go back to the local state inspection to actually pass it. I think it's feasible for it to be on the road legally before end of June.

If you're counting that's 3 trips to my house for the Trooper, 2 trips to local state inspection station for me, plus 2 trips to Baton Rouge (~2.5hr drive 1-way) for me. I know it's dumb and pointless, but if that's what it takes, so be it.

Hey Del
Over on this side of the "pond" garages can use "trade plates" which they fit to a new or second hand car to be allowed to drive it on the road. (These are normally belted around bumpers etc for the drive- or balanced in the rear window etc.).

Of course these plates may not be available in USA - if so Could you borrow a set of plates and drive the car back and forward for the inspections?

Now that's an idea. I'll have to look into it and see, off top of my head a dealer plate may work in this case but I have no friends that are dealers. The inspection station is 12 miles away, 11 of it being on the interstate. It'll take a little luck to not have a cop behind me, but it's pretty rare typically on my drive to work. I hope if luck isn't on my side, I can explain my situation and cross my fingers.

The California DMV provided me with (2) 1-day permits so I could drive my SLC for inspection. I got hard eyeballed by a couple of officers but didn't get pulled over while driving. At the time my car didn't have any plates and was primer gray. You're supposed to sign and date the permits on the day you drive the car, then produce them should you get pulled over. Maybe your state has a similar temporary permit. Most everyone I met during the registration process was super cool but it would totally suck to get your car towed/impounded. Obviously burnouts would be discouraged at this time ;)

I straight up asked the trooper if I could just drive my car to the local inspection station, though I already knew his response, lol. I didn't specifically ask if I could get a temp tag, but assume he would have offered. I'll shoot him a text, worth asking directly. Honestly I'm more worried about the starter dying or fuel pump having issues than getting pulled over, thanks Cam! :)

When I built my trailer and had to get it inspected by the state police, I asked them about how I was supposed to get it up there and they said just bring it. If you have any issues, tell them to call us. I'm kind of banking on if I did get pulled over, I can explain the situation and be okay. I do have a few old personalized plates laying around I could put on there.....but that would be a big no-no and I'd be worse off if they ran it, lol.

Good looking ride there, Iike the orange accents and the flat steering wheel. Allan is getting really good at laying his paint down smooooooth. When there is some time away from my latest project I need to get into some of that accent color work myself. Nice.

Never had such a pleasant and fast experience at a DMV. Got badge, walked in and was told to see desk 11. Lady knew the process, told me what else she required, gave estimate of taxes, gave me rejection letter as trooper told me and I was out of there. 5hrs of drive time, maybe 15min there.

In Louisiana we get to go to the special plates unit so I'm sure that's why it was not only quick but they knew what is needed.

I took a pic of my rejection letter and texted it to the trooper like he asked so he can start his paperwork. He's gotta make another trip to my house, I have to bring car to local inspection station and then back to DMV in Baton Rouge to submit paperwork and pay taxes.

One benefit to being in special plate unit doing this, as soon as SLC taxes are paid, I can immediately submit and pay for my personal plate. They take 12-16 weeks to get, but this will shave a couple week off of it.
