Before this ancient ritual begins I think I should explain the rudiments of the game for our American friends.
Cricket explained.....
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

If you fancy coming up (over, around ) for one of the series it's not really that cold here I'm planning a few visits to various grounds during the Ashes. We can even buy cool(ed) beer here as well. You know it makes sense when your country is in such dire need of support. You don't need lodgings and we've got a spare car or two as well.

In attempting to understand what Pete said I went and looked up the rules of Cricket. I was mildly confused, but after a few reads (long reads at that) I felt I was beginning to understand. Then I got to the portion where they were explaining the different deliveries...
My question is this if a RH bowler throws a Flipper, but then we have a a LH bowler throw a unorthodox googly (a Chinaman for the purist) should the batter try a leg glance or should it be pulled so that the fielder playing deep backward square leg is brought into play in hope of a catch on the full with a boundary touch for six?

David very tempting indeed, thanks for the offer. As a batsman (batter) I never stayed in long enough to get crispy.
Keith, sledging in summer? Something not done by gentlemen and therefore an Aussie would know nothing about it. Better go ask a Kiwi or one of those Pakistani blighters!

Evenly balanced after the first day.
I think the Aussie's have the upper hand but only just. I hope it remains a nicely balanced contest where neither side takes to much of a lead and the last test is a decider. If it doesn't work out like that I would just about settle for a 5- 0 win.
Oh yes, why send in a night watchman to protect a number eight? I can understand doing it for a proper batsman or even a batting all-rounder but a bowler?

Not my first choice sport by any means but I like to keep up so I can make sense when talking to my father-in-law.
Have our bowlers got the ball swinging, its clouding over and not overly hot which if I remember rightly is the recipe for 'swing'.

Hmmm, unless the Aussie's collapse or make a "sporting" declaration, I think we are headed for a draw.
