Many cars back in that day didn’t use catch cans at all. Some just ran hoses or “draft tubes” to the bottom of the chassis. Later in the 70’s, most sanctioning bodies required “puke tanks” for both coolant and oil in order to keep it off the track. That said, many car owners and builders came up with something to contain the lost liquids before they were required. I think that’s one of the reasons you have seen so many different styles and designs.
