This is a real shame.. It was a devastating crash and at 40 years of age, the healing process takes longer and pain is more intense than when 10 years younger.

I saw that too, shame, and very unusual in this day and age.

I used to like Dario right up until the time I discovered he was married to Lesley Judd (be still my pounding heart) and then, having begrudgingly accepted a love rival, he went and divorced her!

You can go right off a bloke..:)

I'm sure he will find a useful niche in the business, after all the Franchitti's are a legendary racing dynasty second only to Andretti.

I think it was Ashley Judd. Certified hottie even if a bit long in the tooth.

Actually, they've combined dynasties and they are now the FranchAndies. Kind of like the NormAndies except they haven't sunk yet.

Keith,

I'm not so sure the Andretti's dynasty out performs the Graham Hill clan....

Andretti family:
1 Indy 500 win
1 World Championship

Hill Family
1 Indy 500 win
3 World Championships
1 Le Mans win

And thats not even counting Phil's World Championship and 3 Le Mans wins:)

;p

The Moss family would have to rate pretty high as well.

A real shame Dario's career had to end this way. I think he would be a great commentator. Any chance?

Tim.

It's Fox so it must be absolutely unarguable... right? ;)

Pretty much.

E.g.: How many 'retractions' have outfits like, say, "The Grey Lady" had to offer over something it reported in the last, oh, say 20 years?

How many has FOX? Has even one been necessary?

(Edit: 'Serious question, BTW. I can't recall any.)

Watch this space, when the pain has gone and he can put one foot in front of the other you will see him in some sort of motorsport. These guys are as tough as old boots and the lure of the track will get him.

I don't remember Jackie Stewart or Emerson Fittipaldi ever getting back behind the wheel after having decided to hang up the helmet... They were easily as good as Dario in my opinion...

Randy,

I think that Sir Jackie and Emo were both among the very fastest of their time, certainly the most successful.

Unfortunately their time coincided with one of the most dangerous eras ever, i think that had a lot to do with the way they retired.

As for Dario, i sincerely hope he makes a full recovery and limits his racing to "Historic's". Dario is not only a great racer, he's a great spokesman for the sport that he obviously loves, but I'm afraid he has used up all of the available luck.

I hope he goes into broadcasting, but he is truly a "racer" and just like Mario, he'll be around.

Sorry to see him go because he got hurt. Damn glad to see he was not killed. Very bad shunt. I was watching the race live and I was real "worried" on that one. The street race fences just don't suite open cockpit cars with usually very little runoff, no room for gravel traps, and very narrow tracks. I don't know what to do except run full cages like a sprint car.

But the real bad thing was the fans seats were on the OUTSIDE of a very fast corner behind a fence that completely failed to contain debris. Just a stroke of luck no fans were killed.

Indy car is really near the end without some real changes, but that going to take a lot of money and there just isn't any. I can't get into the new cars bodywork, I tried, I just don't like them. Next year will have just about everybody running Chevys (Ganassi switched) and they all run Dallaras. It's a total spec series now. Without Indy it would be gone already.

Too bad, maybe Dario could see the handwriting on the wall.

Rally racing venues are worse. Fans line BOTH sides of the roadway everywhere all the time w/no protection at all.

Both situations are madness...

Barmy. But you know that most of those stages are private roads and you can imagine the shitstorm if a spectator got killed. It WILL happen, probably sooner rather than later. I'll be honest - if I was a competitor, I would be less than happy with the WRC spectator situation but wouldn't want it emasculated as F1 is now.

(I'd like to qualify the above by saying: in today's climate, someone has to be to blame)

However, the notion that spectators can crowd the road edge on the outside of a bend is insane, although the resulting energy would dissipate all over the shop.

Whatever, rallying to me is still the supreme form of Motorsport although I do not care for it that much. If they ran side by side, that would be a different matter

They do run side by side, Rallycross anyone?
