G50 Strange shift pattern

HI all

I have been trying to figure what is going on with my G50 gearbox.

I was hooking up my shifter yesterday and found my box works different to all the info I have found??

The gear selection with the rod/shaft of the back of the inverted box has
1st clockwise out
2nd "" in
3rd anti clock out
4th anti clock in
5th anticlock out
and reverse clockwise out

This seams to be the reverse of what everyone has stated??

I have double and triple checked the box and cannot figure it out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Ash

Not much to go by ??? (more details or pics would be useful)--but sounds like either you have a bell crank on the wrong side or a push pull on the bottom of the shifter pivot

should be:- R 1 3 5
--------------2 4

I am refering to the gearbox without the shifter attached . So just looking directly at the shaft coming out of the back of the G50 box.

So looking at the rear of the box the gears are

---------4 2------This pushing the shaft in
-------5 3 1 R----Shaft coming out or back

I can get a pic but its just the rear of the box with the shaft coming out

Thanks

Hi Ash
Yip Chris is right mine is the same as you are describing so it must be in your shifter set up. i can post some pics of linkages if you like.

 Most DRB GT40s are done like this --- looks much better in the flesh than this sketch

Ash you´re right. only thing is that everybody is reffering to the stick inside the car.

when looking at the shift rod where it exits the box.
shift pattern of ALL G50's should be like this picture. note the box is upside down in this picture, that however doesn´t change the shift pattern from normal orientation.

So is the G50 box opposite from the 930 box? Because my 930 box, if replacing Thomas' photo, would be exactly opposite when viewing only the shift rod extending out the rear case.

Hmm I think I made a small mistake Terry, you're absolutly right that when you have the box the other way up the shift pattern on the picture should mirror itself.

My bad.

930 should be the same as G50 and ALL Other VW/Porshe transaxles even a beetle and a waterboxervan would be the same.

So my shift pattern is different because it is the same as the pic that Thomas put up and you guys now say thats incorrect?

My box is in inverted and the pattern is the same as the non inverted???

Ash

Nothing changes whether its inverted or not. In is still in, and clockwise is still clockwise.

Indeed Russ that's very true,
However we ar not turning the shaft directly as per porsche install, we are pulling on a lever that sits above or below the center axle of rotation, and that makes all the difference in whether you point 1st gear to the left or right. and thus makes knowing the orientation of the box and the system used quite important.

I think that's why we are having this problem.

Is the 930 box located differently in the original car then?
I allways thought from the beetle on all VW's have (on the gear stick)
1st left-up
2nd left down,
3rd middle up,
4th midlle down,
5th right up.
and all rear engine cars use a straight shift rod.

exept the cable opperated boxes offcourse.
