Gettrag tranny opinions?

Well, thanks to Jim and Marco, we have an answer: my box is a -2. I know that for certain because I checked the tag when I was down in LV at Christmastime getting a progress report. So that would make it not a sequential box... So I'm free to miss a shift and overrev the engine to my heart's content

I have a program that I have written in excell that calculates your speed at any rpm, with any size tyre (tire) and with any diff/gear ratios you can imagine. It is very user friendly and I can e-mail it to anyone who asks for it.
Its interesting to experiment with 30 inch rims and engines that rev to 20000 rpm......

Does anyone know anything about this option. Gear ratios. Relative strength compared to the 5 speed. Vehicles it was installed in, etc.

Or when you're on the banking at Daytona to get 3 instead of 5 because of the twisting of the chassis.
Speaking of Daytona: Me in my Mk-IV and Lee Holman in his MKII may be doing a parade lap or two with the pace car and the rest of the good old boys before the start of the Firecracker 400 this July 4th. If this happens I'll let you all know.

The M1 is flipped the right way from the start.
the -2 wich "most" people use, is from the "Pantera" and those needs the dissassembly and the flipping...
There are Maserati -2´s for example wich is right flipped as well.
But those have other ratios and i expect not to be of every one´s liking...
Etc..etc..

I have a post over in the Transmission section sort of asking the same question. However, the box I am considering is the Getrag 6 spd that goes in the Boxster S. Ultima use this for the GTR. Has anybody tried this yet? and more importantly has anyone got the details for an adapter plate for said box onto a 302?

Neal,

That's a great website for the 01E. However, for those of us that don't know Audi car models very well, would you be able to list those that use the 01E 6 spd? That portion of the site seemed vaugue.

Mark Clapp has shown me which ones have the 016/5N 5 spd, and this is most likely the way I'll go. Hersch is having great success with his 5N also.

It'd be good to check out the 01E though.

Have fun!

Neal,
Great site for trans info. Thanks for posting it.
I'm still confused as to which six spd
would be the one to get. Will the Quattro six spd work. I was thinking it would with
the possibility of some minor modifications to rid the quattro drive output.

I'm soooo confused ?????

PS...So far the 5N box is doing well. I just like the idea of a better ratio for cruising the interstates at 75mph with out
turning 3000rpms.

To all,

I have a NEW 6 speed gearbox comming in from Germany as I write this. I will be making a full conversion for our cars and I would hope that this could be adapted for other cars. The conversion I am aluding to will include all mounts, gearchange, adaptor plates, clutch and starter motor : the complete package.

The gearboxes are new because they are very difficult to get second hand as they are from cars only a few years old.

The easiest thing to say as to ratios is that the first five gears are similar to the O16 boxes, but with an overdrive sixth gear.

This has been done because of various comments about the ratios in the O16 box and after lengthy talks to Hershal. Again the strength of this forum is shown.

Time scales are mid this year and costs are unknown.

Gordon will supply an adaptor plate for an O16 to 302W if requested. Costs are at our web site.

Best wishes,

Robert

Robert,

I went to your website but didn't see the 016 adapter w/price. Where am I not looking correctly?

Have fun!

John,

Once my site is open, top right open partial kits and then scrool down to part 58 or so and it will be there. All the prices are in US $ and are subject to freight from Az. only.

Best wishes,

Robert

Robert,,,,
considering the recent (last 6 months or so) drop of the value of the US dollar against most other currencies,,,,,,,are the prices on your site current?

Hopefully, I'm not straying too much off topic,here....
....just wondering how much of an effect the situation in the middle east is having on international trading?

I have an Uncle with a distribution biz in Belgium, & he has told me that his US market has dropped quite a bit in the last few months.

Robert,

Thanks, I found it. I was looking at the Roaring Forties (U.K.) website, not the 'Down Under' site.

Your site is excellent in detail.

Have fun!

FWIW...I took this picture on the Ultima stand at the Autosport show. Ultima offer this as an alternative to the G50. I couldn't get much info from them other than it's a Getrag box & IIRC cost is around 3000 UKP. The adaptor plate on the bellhousing is for a SB Chevy. Both items are available from Ultima.

Is this is the Porsche Boxster 'box? It looks to me like it's inverted, judging by the way the input shaft is above the driveshaft centreline. I assume the hex plug in the 'top' was originally intended as a drain plug. I have no info on ratios or the weight of the box.

For my car currentley running a Renault the work involved in changing the mountings, making a Ford adaptor plate, driveshafts etc makes it not worth the effort.

All the products on the Ultima stand were top quality & the cars are extreemley well enginered. If only someone would put a GT40 body on an Ultima chassis!

Julian,
You are correct finally someone who understands. The box is a Getrag Type 228 transaxle, which is used in the Boxster S. Ultima can sell you a box for 3,5 + VAT, the same price as Neil Foreman will do. However, if you contact Douglass Valley, they will do you a second-hand unit, with years warranty for about 1,5 + VAT (this includes a year's warranty as well if I remember).

If you decide to take this route, I would interested on talking to you re: adapter plate and clutch etc. Have been advised by somebody that I could use a normal 302 flywheel and put a Tilton clutch on.
