GT40 3D bodyshell

Hi guys,

After hours of searching I have yet to find a decent 3D bodyshell of a GT40....

The only worth while drawings I have found are the sectional drawings that I think quite a few peolpe have here.

I am wondering if some of the solidworks users on this forum who can use the surfacing tools in solidworks would like to unite to create a 3D bodyshell that is available to anybody with the option of giving a donation of course!

Would it be possible to host files on this forum as it would be very handy to have a parts database available of engines, brakes, gearboxes etc..

What do people think?

From what I have seen a typical laser scan will cost thousands and then you need specialist software to work with the point clouds, also the point clouds are just that so you then need to create surfaces from the points which again is a job of work to do (It's not as simple as Jay Leno makes out).

This guy: TYiO Infographie - Home Will sell you a 3D model of a GT40.

But what type of model you want depends upon what you want to do with it? If its modelling the mechanics of the inside of the car then a 'regular' CAD type model (SolidWorks etc) is what you want, but if you intend to send it to a 3D router to make a plug for example then from what I can gather you need a decent NURBS model.

Another method is to scale off of a scale model as per Fred WB's example with his excellent work on his T70 rep (search the forum).

You're right Doug. I contacted the company in the link I posted previously. It would cost around $7k and take over a week to complete. 1-1/2 days just to perform the scans and another 5 working days to combine the files and convert to SolidWorks format.

Can I ask what the need would be for, on scanning the body on a GT40? I have 100% accurite bodys available for sale and would probably let somebody scan one. I just have not figured out the need.

I'm designing a space frame chassis in SolidWorks. In my case anyway, it would be nice to have a 3D model of the body to add to the CAD model of the chassis. I already have a body so it is not a necessity. I checked on the price of the scan out of curiosity.

Molleur,

It is an interesting site. Thanks for the link.

Cushmancompetition, thanks for offering the body for scanning.

if youre looking for something free, you could try google's 3d program, sketchup. you can get it for free and download just about anything you want for free, too.

Not sure if anyone still is interested in this thread, but I have converted a couple of 3D models available from the net, into files for manipulation in programs like Solidworks, AutoCAD and RhinoCAD. I did a Ferrari FXX a few months ago, and have had a skeleton model cut from MDF for around AU$800. Basically, it's a longitudinal center line, with lateral profiles cut at 200mm centers. From this, I will (eventually) use polyurethane foam cut to size, to fill the rest of the shape. Much like Des has done with the GT90, but with foam, not a mesh / glass skin.

I know that there are a few places where these 3D models are available from, and yes, they do have GT40s. Remember though, these models are not free.

I got a couple of quotes for a full 5 axis CNC body cut, and the average price was around $1500 per sq mtr. This equates to approximately AU$38,000 to create to foam body - then you've gotta make the molds, then the actual pieces.

I have to move my FXX pieces later today, so I'll take a couple of pics and post them later. Here are a few screen shots of the initial model...
