Handbrake cable length help please!

Hi all

Having just installed the motor into P2378 I have noticed that the handbrake cables are touching the crank pulley. Im using a 2 row v belt pulley to work with the supplied Hi tec ancillary brackets for the alternator and aircon. I have the cable's routed from the chassis brackets as they came from the factory and they flow under the engine mount chassis pick ups as installed at Hit tec. They could do with being at least 3-4 inches longer. I did notice one cable appears to be slightly longer than the other. My question is , is it possible to lengthen them at the handbrake end, or have people had new ones remade longer ?

Hi Jason
Looking at your second picture I presume that black cable is the one feeding the handbrake calliper on each side.

Are your handbrake callipers on the right side? If swapped over the cable input would be from the bottom and probably give the extra length you require.

But I have a Dax so a much different set up to yours.

It looks to me that you have a lot of cable you could work with by rerouting them at the rear. I have mine running up along side the oil pan and through the motor mount bracket then around the side of the pan into the center.

Install some "P" clamps where the cables run past the bulkhead opening moving them outboard.

Looked at that rick but that just shortens the effective length of the cable and makes it tight. There isnt enough length in the cable to do that.

Hi ian. The Superformance doesnt use callipers it has a drum type arrangement and comes pre fitted with cables on them.

The only solutions i can think of are routing the cable directly in between the belts for a more direct route ( not great ), or relocating the cables in front of the rear chassis towers but that would bring the cable very close to the exhaust manifolds.
If i had about 3 inches more length i could route them around the pulleys. Mmm!

Talking about that drum brake...... same early cars had an issue with that in regards of the bolts fixing that actuator and becoming loose......
Just want to make sure you know about. There is an easy fix for that - if I remember correctly there are several threads about that in forum.....

Pic #1 is as-delivered from SPF. Notice the hi location of the e-brake cables.
Pic #2 shows the cables turning sharply to miss the front drive then going aft.

Thanks steven. Yes mine were routed the same from the factory. Unfortunatley i cant do what you have done ( route sharply to the side of the pulley) because my cable simply isnt long enough. I pulled both cables off today after trying every possible route i could think of. I noticed the driver side cable (on my RHD ) is the same length as the near side one. It should be longer because the tunnel is offset to give a great width to the driver side seat and has further to stretch. Its the one that just doesnt have a hope in hell of working. Im going to get some new ones made to allow the cable to flow around the side of the chassis like your picture.
What a pita !!
