How I Spent My Summer Vacation

A long way to go on my Lotus 49 replica, can't decide whether to continue on with the monocoque route or go with the space frame, clad in ally to look like one. Still have a lot of fitting and fabrication, hope to be out by next spring. Just couldn't come up with the cash for a real one.

Nice! Very clean, much like your work space. I also admire the Tamiya models you have for inspiration on your tool chest. Being a devout Can-Am fan I have to ask, are you going to run the "banned" wing from the 49B?

What a beautiful project. I hope you stick with the monocoque, but that's a serious case of "let's you and him fight."

Gordy,

Fantastic!

I always though that the Lotus 49 was one of the four or five best looking F1 cars of all time.

I know you have given it lots of thought, so what will it be, green/yellow or red/gold?

Gordy,

Great project....I recently went to Beaulieu Motor Museum, and took about 30 close up pics of the Lotus 49.

Most of the pics are of the rear suspension, and how it attaches to the engine/gearbox. if your intrested, ill post the pics here for you.

I hope you go all the way, and make a monocoque chassis...

Gordy, Mono all the way! BTW, Beaulieu Motor Museum is always fantastic! The James Bond displays are great too.

So far the mono version is the direction I want to go, it's just a lot of fitting and fiddling and very limited info to work with. I have to completely redo all the panels as the current ones are too soft of an alloy.

Planning the original style 49,( R2 ) with green / yellow colors, no wing, with two possible drivetrain choices.

My first choice is a DFV or DFR coverted to DFV look. I am also working on a small block 289, which will have Inglese injection, with proper inward tilt on the trumpets, and valve covers I am fabricating which will look identical to those on a DFV. ZF transaxle, which is what the first few had before changing to Hewlands.

Either way I am looking for at least 95% accuracy in appearance, and a usable track car, not a static display. Definitely something to look forward to during the winter months instead of snow.

Mick, any pictures you have would be much appreciated, that is one area I am lacking in for the fine detail.

I will try to post from time to time with updates.

Fantastic project! You are going to find DFR/DFV expensive in the rebuild department but a good 289/302 should be just as quick and far more practical. Some trickery with the valve covers to resemble a DFV should be fairly straight forward but have you considered my all time favourite Fords both of which found their way into Lotus cars?

Lotus 49 pics

The Lotus 49 is my favorite car, and its shows Colin Chapman at his best...

Im buliding an alloy monocoque, chassis for my GT 40, and the rear suspension layout, will be based on the Lotus 49. I live about 40 mins drive from the museum, and I would be happy to go there , and get some more pics of the car for you...

I hope you find my pics usefull, and I cant wait to see your car as it progresses

Good luck with your project

Help Needed / Locating a Part

The project is progressing somewhat slowly, as the regular SCCA racing season took up the summer. Now that it's over I will get back to it and try to have the car done by spring.

I need some help locating a set of cam covers for a DFV. Here is a picture of what I am looking for. Posted at the usual race car sites, hoping someone out there can help with my search. So far no luck.

I did find a gentleman in the UK, Chris Perkins, who was reproducing them, but have been having trouble getting through to him by email.

Any help or leads appreciated.

Gordy, mate what a fantasic project, and i'm glad to see i'm not the only lunatic on this forum, as I;m building a BT24 Brabham replica, or should I say look alike, but as funds are not as plentifull as I would like, i'm using a SBF 302 roller cam engine with an Audi 5 speed trans., some pics here

Still plodding along on my Lotus build, although sometimes it seems that I might actually be going backward. I decided to finish the monocoque, so if anyone needs a Lotus frame/body lookalike, I've got one.

I did finally get a proper Cosworth DFV, but it will need to be rebuilt, so no more throwing out deposit pop cans, I need every dime I can get.

I do need some help or at least steered in the right direction. I am trying to source wheels, and as fate would have it, the originals were custom made in house by Lotus, according to all the info I have. And shockingly, when I called them, I kind of got the cold shoulder.

I have included a pic of what I am looking for and while I don't expect to get exact, I would like something close. Fronts are 15 x 8-11" range and rears are 15x10-14". Ideally I would like to find 9" and 12" widths.

Any help appreciated. Vintage Engineering has mags that look pretty similar but thought I should check here first before pulling the trigger.
