I think we now have a fairly good idea of what your imaginary country would be like. First of all it would be a number of very rich selfish Conservatives but no bleeding hart liberals or people who care about others.

That leaves out Teachers, Nurses, most Doctors (but you'll keep the Lawyers). Of course they will disband the socialist police and socialist fire dept, of course the socialist public works dept will go so you cant drive your cars as the roads will deteriorate.

In the end you will have heavaly armed angry men living behind large fences trying to protect themselves from roving bands of un-employed police and angry retired people with no social security or medacare.

This sounds kind of like the dark ages!

Jane Fonda on the NVA anti-aircraft gun

Fonda visited Hanoi in July 1972. Among other statements, she repeated the North Vietnamese claim that the United States had been deliberately targeting the dike system along the Red River stating that “I believe in my heart, profoundly, that the dikes are being bombed on purpose”. Columnist Joseph Kraft, who was also touring North Vietnam, believed that the damage to the dikes was incidental and was being used as propaganda by Hanoi, and that if the U.S. Air Force were "truly going after the dikes, it would do so in a methodical, not a harum-scarum way."[22]
In North Vietnam, Fonda was photographed seated on an anti-aircraft battery.[23] In her 2005 autobiography, she writes that she was manipulated into sitting on the battery. Later she claimed to have been horrified at the implications of the pictures and stated that she regretted the pictures. During her trip Fonda also made ten propagandistic radio broadcasts in which she denounced American political and military leaders as "war criminals". Fonda has defended her decision to travel to North Vietnam and has defended her radio broadcasts. [24][25]
During this visit she also visited American prisoners of war (POWs), and brought back messages from them to their families. When cases of torture began to emerge among POWs returning to the United States, Fonda called the returning POWs "hypocrites and liars." She added, "These were not men who had been tortured. These were not men who had been starved. These were not men who had been brainwashed."[26] On the subject of torture in general, Fonda told The New York Times in 1973, "I'm quite sure that there were incidents of torture... but the pilots who were saying it was the policy of the Vietnamese and that it was systematic, I believe that's a lie."

You've been drinking too much San Fran cool aid. What would we do without liberals to lead us around. See your little Jane fraternizing with the North Viets, you would fit right in.

Fair enough, we all thought the banking system was going to collapse. Some of us thought that we would have been better to do what McCain said, extend the Bush tax credits, etc.

We all know that government spending does some good, but it is highly inefficient compared to kick starting the economy by helping business move forward.

Couple of points:
- Gordon Brown is the first one who imposed a stimulus package on the world, and convinced all of the EU to do the same. You can now see the results
- I heard liberal economists say that we could go to something like 12% debt of GDP, which as we can see now, can't be done without disasterous consequences.

Jeff, you probably saw the employee letter (healthcare), written by a right wing blogger about a guy who had a number of tire stores. From my unsophisicated point of view, my friends with small business did just what this blogger said he was going to do. I was just with a cousin in Italy, and he is continuing to follow what that blogger said.

By the way, Jesus is for everyone, not just the rich or poor. He stood up for the poor because they needed help. But remember he worked with them all and was critical of those with the hardened hearts.

You have been watching to much Limbaugh. So just like him you pick the most extreme example of somthing and then paint everyone with the same brush.

Jeff,
I know that you enjoy being a discussion maker and I am sure that you have a great love of debate. I have a great question for you. What has the government made? By that I mean what products or services has the government created that adds to the bottom line in revenue generation. They are a net spender and user of services. The employees of any government entity must be paid out of the resources created by the general population. There is no other way to look at the macro-economics.
I am not going to get into a debate about the "need" for government services. Most Americans agree that there is a need for the general population to support services led by all government entities and pay taxes. Some of these include police, fire, military, etc. All of these appear to be good ideas and make a level playing field for the economy to create jobs and provide for the pursuit of happiness that most humans aspire to. What government policies do, especially in the FDR,LBJ, and now the BO administration is to take the level of government control of the American economy to different level. That will and has lead to unintended (or intended, perhaps) consequences in the allocation of resources and jobs in the American economy. To argue otherwise is to ignore the evidence of economic research for the last 200 years. If the government desides to go to war, then the economy will react by producing more weapons and hiring (conscripting?) more soldiers. This will change the balance of resources in the general economy. If the government desides to make all higher education available to every citizen, then there will be a new economy stimulus in building or expanding institutions of higher learning and the hiring of educators.
What I was getting at is the government is a catalyst of change in the allocations of resources and how the economy will evolve due to decisions by the elected leaders.
This can be good or bad, depending upon your viewpoint of what is expected from our politicians. Some feel that the less interference that the government makes in the economy, the better. others, believe that more government oversight is necessary. I believe that our governing bodies need to be the referees and not attempt to be players (employers). The fastest growing segment of the economy in the last year has been in government jobs. Unfortunately, these jobs produce nothing in the way of goods or services that can be exported and reduce the debt. These new jobs are putting an additional drag on the econmy at large and will continue to drag the economy going forward by making the cost of borrowing money higher. Debt must be paid. Our politicians in Washington and about 30 states have been hiding their collective heads in the sand in the expansion of services while attempting to create specious tax cuts, create hidden taxes, and generally act in an irresponsible manner. That includes both sides of the isle in congress. We need a change and unfortunately, this president and the one before him, is no economist. One was a son of privilege and the other rose out of the middle due to government programs that helped pay for his education and welfare. Can anyone argue that these guys have any understanding of the middle-class...the hard working American who lives from payday to payday. I don't think so.
Garry

Garry, don't forget all the "Green Jobs" that will be created by our government. So far, how many have been produced, 10,000 nation-wide?

As two British friends said the other night:
1 x Jamacian family - BHO is a talker with no action
1 x Black Country guy - BHO is a prat
and both were supporters of BHO before the oil spill.

I've probably seen Limbaugh once in my life. The divorce, which was written as a joke, does have people like you in mind I guess. Jane Fonda sitting on a north viet anti aircraft gun and saying what she did about POWs isn't offensive to you? Or were you out burning flags at that time? I don't paint anyone, I just don't agree with some people's views. Being an American from the United States gives me that right. I don't have a problem with you watching the left wing drivel you watch, I haven't even made mention of it until this point, you on the other hand have an unheathy desire to control my viewing! If you don't like this thread, you can change to another, that's known as freedom of choice, and as of this moment you don't control mine. Take off the rose colored glasses!

Al,

Of course I found Ms Fondas actions reprehensibe, just as I would find lumping Attila the Hun with other conservatives!

I saw your little joke, did you see mine?

If I wanted politics, then there are probably other websites I could go to discuss that. But I don't go there for it either.

Actually Al, this is a car website and why I visit. I actually am interested in your build (more so than these type of thread discussions which go no where but down the toilet).
