Jimmymac & Alistair's Monocoque Cars

re: Jimmymac & Alistair's Cars

I am quite staggered by Ray and Steves total commitment to craftsmanship and authenticity. I am in no doubt these cars are going be THE definitive recreations that leave even the finest chassis being built now by others in the shade, and will most certainly be seriously considered by owners of original cars when their chassis need to be renewed.

I know what you mean - I was sold the moment I stepped through the door :). Of the 4 cars currently in build there are 3 slightly different chassis specifications on the tables as the guys are up for recreating an actual car's chassis details rather than just doing a "generic" GT40 if there ever was such a thing. Early Mk.I, Late Mk.I, Gulf Mk.I, Mk.IIA, Mk.IIB all are different in the details, let alone the Mk.III they can do! What's next lads, Roadster or Mirage??

Obviously these two cars have the priority in the manufacturing order as they have been involved in the project since day one and I am only a latecomer, still that gives me more time for my Mk.II research!!

Keep up the great work guys.

Cheers

Craig

Our stash of parts include some remarkable pieces including a JWA Gulf ZF/1 transaxle fitted to the Mirage M1/10001 and driven at Monza and Spa in 1967 by Ickx / Rees and Piper.
The serial number of this piece also fits between 1006 and 1009 which were originally fitted to P1074 and P1075 respectively.

I don't see a "dead" pedal but believe they were used for bracing in the originals

Will one be fitted?

re: Jimmymac & Alistair's Cars

James,
You and your parts guys are the best. I can't wait to see that completed build. Please keep great documentation for all of us who aspire to do something similar( truth be told, we will never get that close). From what I have learned watching your build info is that your car should be as good as an origional when finished.

On the shifter medallions what do you mean by early, also what determined what color was used? Did you have these made?

Hi James,

Interested in the medallion.

Will you sell one with the black background?

Please advise by PM.

Thanks, Steve

It depended upon which gear lever set-up was fitted.
I have rarely seen these on original cars, definitely not seen one on a MKII and only one on a MKIII.
The plum knob which was fitted to Lotus cars were the type used and some knobs were flatter on top with a larger medallion.

Translucent Ruby Red was the original colour for the cloisonne but I had the black ones made up because we fancied them on our washbasin taps in the workshop.

The matresses are coming together nicely at the upholsterer.
We used nickel eyelets in a fire-proof ballon skirt material. The seats should be complete in a couple of weeks.

re: Jimmymac & Alistair's Cars

Thank You for posting the Metalastic picture. What great memories. Thirtyfive years ago I was introduced to the engineering splendor that is the Metalastic coupling by my little Lotus Elan. They would not last long and I got pretty good at exchanging them. On the first one I took off the steel band before installation. What a miserable afternoon that turned into....
These things are great in theory but I think my expenciences were repeated by many metalastic owners. And of course the gentle rocking of the car with the handbrake on. Back and forth as the rubber segments compressed and expanded :) Good Times.

I assume knowing the guys that both are available depending on what chassis spec is specified. I know they have bent over backwards trying to replicate all the Mk.II mods.

James -
Thanks to you and Roy for the hospitality yesterday and the guided tour for Helen and me.
I was so impressed with what I saw in front of me yesterday I nearly ordered the fourth monocoque there and then. Of the various mono's I've seen in the last few years, I think Ray is now up to speed with the various nuances of the 40 mono and in my opinion is probably making the best monocoque around bar none. The next time Henry Atherton is home from France, I'll find time to bring him down to Dorset and give you his opinion. (It was Henry who built the Safir tubs in High Wycombe, and did some work on the Jim Rosenthals tub en route from NZ to the USA).
Thank you again

Well thank you David for taking the detour to spend some time with us.
It is always gratifying to get one more opinion as I know that you have been around these monocoques for a long time.
Henry and your goodself are most welcome any time of the day.

Cordially,

re: Jimmymac & Alistair's Cars

Look's Good James.
Too bad it's not here. I would like to run it through the chemwash. Put a couple of drainage holes in the floorpan and run it throught the ELPO Phosphate dip. From there it would go through a three stage bake. It would be annealed in the same process. It would come out a light olive green colour. Just prime, paint and assemble.
Dave

Dave,
You have got me thinking.
I have now decided to prime my chassis by electrophoresis here in the UK.
Shortly, the chassis will be chemically cleaned, etched then dip coated with zinc phosphate and a subsequent primer coat.

He is an original chassis recently done at the works.
