Modifying a Porsche G50 Transaxle

Thanks Dave and others.

I have looked at Los Angeles Dismanlters' website. They appear to have a continuing movement of transaxles. Since they are local to me, I will give them a call tomorrow.

""Have you a part number / photos of the Audi unit.""

I was wrong, it's from a BMW.

1986 BMW 325E 2.7L SOHC

manufacture ATS
part number S04004

cost $30.19 from the local aftermarket parts house. BMW unit on right in pic.

The Porsche unit on the left is aftermarket and $135. Note the angle of the mount flange. When you invert the trans the bleeder is on the bottom but if you flip the slave to put the bleeder on top the angle is wrong and probably puts side loading on the piston/bore.

Also the Porsche inlet is 14mm, there is no adapter that fits, either you buy the Porsche piece, probably an expensive rubber hose or you machine something. The BMW unit has a 10mm X 1.0mm inlet, a common size for hydraulic fittings. I used a banjo and braided steel line so it can be clocked to the best clearance.

Another piece of info from PowerHaus II was that the clutch pedal needs a stop. Apparently the system can pull the throw-out bearing too far and bend the pressure plate springs, not good.

When setting it up you push the clutch pedal until it releases. Maybe have someone trying to spin a rear wheel with the engine off. After the point where it releases you go another 1/4" of slave travel I believe. Then have the clutch pedal stop at this point. I'm not positive the measurement was 1/4", didn't write it down. Will have to call them back and confirm that measurement.

Kalun,

Great catch!!! I got my Porsche slave through NAPA for quite a bit less than $135, but the issue with the bleed is a major PITA. I hate bleeding it with the slave removed and then having to compress it enough to bolt it on. On my car, the end of the bleeder is way to close to a frame member and I am constantly worried that it will be broken off. I did solve the fitting issue with an adapter fitting I got from Pegasus, but it has a rubber seal (boss fitting) that is also worrisome. I also found that the Porsche slave cannot be flipped.

I will definitely be getting one of these BMW units! I like the fact that you can use a banjo also; the Porsche boss is not machined flat, so a banjo won't work with it without machining.

Lynn

Steve-We are FORD people here try the ULTIMA site. Not only that but most of the guys here are sick of vague transaxle questions. If you don't believe me check the new transaxle board for battle weary
frivolity. One point in your favour you gave us your first name.We respond better to names. Most of us have a soft spot for Lola T70s though so your ok.I personally think the "road use only" line is stupid because tyre shredding/smoking take offs are the domain of a lot of road users(read clutch abusers). So I would change the wording from "road use only " to "clutch friendly driver" and the alternative...... "clutch abusive driver". We all know the type of driver you are especially when you destroy the clutch of your road car 3 or 4 times inside the warranty period. What you need to do Steve is some research, try the word Kennedy for adaptor, that's as much as I'm giving you.Stop being lazy and get off your backside and search forums. The information is there you will find it given a certain amount of effort.Gee I'm in one of those moods today.

Ross

Steve,

Kennedy Engineered Products and Renegade Hybrids would be worth looking into. KEP makes adapters for almost anything, and Renegade is a Chevy small block powered Porsche specialist.

A little bit snappy eh Chris.Yeah sorry Steve I got carried away with the clutch thing. Welome aboard and if your from the mainland (south Island) a big warm welcome from me.Hey if Peter R has done Chev to G50 adaptor plates, he wouldn't have used them in a GT40 would he?
Ross

Kennedy does the LS1 to Porsche G50 adaptors. I recently ordered one for a non-GT40 project. Expect to wait 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. They have everything including the plate, flywheel, clutch, starter and all the other odds and ends needed.

Have I got a grumpy reputation now have I? I'm over it so back to fun Ross.Got to look after my Kiwi mates eh! By the way Pete you were pretty quiet when the all blacks took home the Bledisloe cup and won Tri Nations, what say you?SP250 now I reckon thats a Daimler sports car with wings and drum brakes on the rear, looks a bit like a mk3 Zephur from the rear.Am I right Steve? $75 is a good price for a rotor if theyre new, I paid $500 for a pair of obscure holden ones for the rear of the 40.I think your in the North Island Steve is that why you haven't owned up to me.Russ Noble and I have both raced at Teretonga, what is your background? sounds like your as mad about cars as the rest of us.

Not grumpy Ross

hi guys, background ---- well, started out as sheety, went on to st/steel,mait eng. food prod. factory maint./ des./ build type stuff. taught to drive in an SP (org. discs on rear) had sports cars always, Healy total build with sloper 225 chrysler ,jag. rear etc. TR.S BMWs 635, 325 coupe now.into property and am now guilty of playing with the toys almost full time till the money runs out. have given myself permission to have some fun.was in melbourne in oct. last year and at gp a couple of years ago when Ralph Shooy did his flying act in front of the lad and i (Brabham Stand i think we were in) last year spent with gt 40 nz. then builkt two lolas for the man and desided i had to have one. so here i am ,sadly lacking a g50 for the beast. regards steve

This a worthwhile thread so i thought id try and revive it. The guys at Ultima recommend a standard G50 box is strong enough for even the most powerful smallblock engines. They're record breaking run 0-100-0 was done with a standard box. A unmodified G50/03 box to be exact. They're running a 720hp small block in front of it and are putting it through quite some abuse. The difference between a rebuilt G50/52 turbo box and a G50/03 Box was exactly 5000 dollars last time i checked.
