New EU Regulations

Prospective new builders should be aware of new EU regulaions coming into force from Feb 2011. New braking assist systems, including laser warning and self braking systems and soft front bumper areas are to be mandatory to protect pedestrians from injury. Anyone run into a pedestrian at 5 mph ? Frank

Do you see this being manatory for amateur built cars also then ?
How long do you imagine it will take to get into the IVA test ?
I may need to accelerate my build somewhat.

BOOF!!!!

I'm with you there Martin. better ramp up the build.

I can't seriously see how they can squeeze that into the IVA though (although I don't disbelieve you at all Frank).

Ho hum... more legislation and job justification. Just what we need!

Frank, Martin,
I would assume not. Mass market have different rules to lower volume, hence why you still don't need an airbag in our cars. To implement this would cost too much for an individual builder, especially on the 5mph, as you would have to build at least 2 vehicles; one that you would have to use for crash.

I had a long discussion at the Festival of Speed with Ian Stent of Complete Kit Car. He has a vested interest in EU regs, IVA etc because he could suddenly find himself out of a job should regulations suddenly make the registration of home-built cars much more difficult.

Once we had established the differences between the various types of Whole Vehicle Approval for home builders, manufacturers and so on, we got a little more philosophical.

The reason for the switch from SVA to IVA was driven by the EU, with the intention to make the standardised IVA approval of a vehicle in one country acceptable in all the others. Very praiseworthy I hear you cry, but wait one - how will it be implemented?

Imagine the committee set up to design a test acceptable to all EU countries, for this is what would be necessary. From Italy and Scandinavia on the one hand, who consider home-builts to be the spawn of the devil, to the UK, and to a lesser extent France and Germany, who recognise the economic value of a healthy home-building market. Each country will argue in favour of its own interests and will form blocs with similar-minded countries. The outcome, because the EU antis are more numerous than the pros, is that the IVA will become progressively stricter as the antis ratchet up the pressure. This is as certain as night follows day.

So, beware the magazine articles that say, 'No worries, the IVA is very little different from the SVA'. Maybe it is - now - but PC-BS regulations like those described by Frank will be with us, probably sooner rather than later.

Laser warning systems? Is there a limit on the maximum wattage for the lasers?

Can it be powerful enough to singe the clothing of anyone who gets too close to my car? :flameon:

Frank do you have any more specifics on this? As someone who is just about to take delivery of a GT40 kit this is very concerning.

Trevor, several sites on the internet ran this "news" but I cannot remember exact web addresses. As Brett says, it may not apply to single vehicle approvals as against mass market, although one site was adamant that it would affect all cars and vans, including vehicles to go IVA. Lets hope sense prevails, but I wouldnt put my money on it !

I'm sorry, but what a bunch of WU$$IES the EU has become.

"Ah, yes, we must protect the unwashed masses from themselves."

I feel for you. Being from California, I have some idea of the obsticles put in place by the erudite who are the ruling class.
