New SLC Wiki

I’ve been a long time lurker on this site. I was looking to build a GT40, but have decided on a SLC . I started doing a lot a research and during that process decided that I wanted a better way to organize everything that I learned from all of the great threads on the forum. So I contacted Will and we decided to build a new wiki. I sponsored the site, handled the tech and generated some content. Will did a lot of editing and created a massive amount of content.

The new wiki has lots of new content, lots of pictures and sophisticated search. If you’re a SLC owner you can PM Will or I and we’ll provide you with a logon to slc.wiki that provides better access and the ability to leave comments. If you’re not an owner you can go to public.slc.wiki.

I hope that you enjoy the wiki as much as we've enjoyed building it.

Very well done and TY for all the work and making it publicly available.

Best,
K

Thank you! Love the site. I am still a lurker, not yet builder. What sorts of info are not available to folks like me?
Thanks again,
Mike

SMART question, Mike!
As I was conducting my due diligence regarding cobra replicas there was a company in which I was very interested. I was absolutely certain that their product would end up being my choice. The product manufacturer hosted a forum and I joined that forum to find out everything I could so that I would feel good about my choice.
...well, soon I found out that the company operated a second forum that was not available to those who did not own one of their products. I was immediately suspicious that the company might be hiding how difficult it would be to build one of their products and voiced that concern. Everyone said there was nothing being hidden, but in the end I could not shake the feeling that there was something the company did not want prospective customers knowing until after they had my money.
We all have comfort levels when making such large purchase decisions, so my advice is for you to get the information you need, and if there is someone or something keeping you from succeeding in those endeavors you have to decide for yourself if that is a deal-breaker.
It was for me.

Cheers!!

I assume Doug was talking about the Superformance forum, which AFAIK, is a factory-owned forum open only to Superformance owners.

There is no analog for Superlite or RCR products.

The SLC Builders wiki is not an official Superlite or RCR product, and is maintained by and for non-factory builders.

While the wiki is focused entirely on the SLC, and traditionally all of the interest and participation has been from SLC builders, the new one has had considerable input and support from Scott, who is still a prospective builder. In other words, if you have an interest in the car, and can participate, the wiki admins would welcome that interest and participation.

There is also an informal message board for SLC owners. And like the wiki, it has no factory participation.

To Doug's comment or concern, I assume it has to do with an experience with Superformance, but there is nothing like that at Superlite or RCR.

To Mike's concern, the best way to get an in-depth understanding of the build process is to talk to other builders about their experiences. There are plenty on this site, and I assume most all of them would be happy to share their experience- I know I have chatted with many people over the years about the experience, including Mike. :)

There’s no conspiracy here, really...

As Will indicated the wiki was entirely built by SLC builders and one lurker (me). I was doing a lot of research and I got really frustrated trying to find something that I had previously read or seen. The old wiki had very basic technology, so I started a wiki on my laptop. I then spoke with Will and he supported creating an improved public wiki. (good thing because the old free wiki provider shut down this month). Problem was that all of the free/cheap stuff wasn’t all that powerful. Compared to the stuff I’m used to at work, it was like going from F1 to an old VW bug.

So, I bought a one-year subscription to state-of-the-art wiki. The substantial registration fee includes a handful of registered users and each additional registered user costs me $240/year. At this point all content has been made public. The only differences as far as I can tell are search and a really slick home page which indicates what files and pages have changed. This is solely a result of the wiki’s licensing and not the desire of the wiki builders. In a year the current subscription will expire and we’ll reevaluate. Until then we’re focused on using it to generate content.

If you're really in deep research mode, PM and I might be able to rotate you into an account. But that said, only difference is search and the home page.

If you’d like to make a contribution, you can have Will or I upload it. I can also provide limited “edit” accounts out of the pool that I have already purchased.

As for making a decision on which vendor to go with: read the forums, look at the engineering, talk to people that have built cars from your two contenders and go visit the factories. I didn't know who RCR was when I started my journey looking for a GT40, but I'm headed towards a SLC. Fran is committed to engineering and constant improvement…

In any event, I hope the wiki makes your research easier before and after a purchase!

Thanks for the responses all. I have communicated with several owners and "bent several ears", including Will's at Charlotte last year. Thanks to all for your patience. Planning a trip to RCR next month. For the wiki, my interest is in a street car, and the ease of obtaining a title and registration varies state to state. Will and I talked about this in Charlotte but I am in TN and I do not believe it has been done here. So maybe a wiki subject?
Thanks again!

Mike,

I just uploaded a new registration page that may have some information that you find useful. It would be great if SLC builder's with registered street cars would provide me with the following:

*state/province/country
*what year (regulations change)
*insights
*if it's OK to associate the data point with your GT40 account or whatever

I can then create a matrix

No...the forum was one operated by the Hurricane company that makes only a Cobra replica, to my knowledge. There were two forums operated by that company, one with public access and one available ONLY to OWNERS of the Hurricane product. While that second forum may sound like a build forum, and in fact I was told that it did include some build information, it was reported by the owners of the Hurricane business to be an attempt to provide the owners of their products with information regarding the product without having to "endure" the input of those who do not own a Hurricane.

In defense of the individuals who set up the second "Owners Only" forum, the members who also participated on the publicly available forum all said there was nothing hidden there.

It all just smacked of an effort to keep something from the general public. I wish I could have gotten past that suspicion, because I am a big fan of the Hurricane product, but their secrecy was a "red flag" for me.

FYI...RCR did at one time operate a public forum. I joined and contributed a few posts, but not having an RCR product I was not very active on that forum. I don't think it continues to exist.

Bottom line....make sure you're ready to live with your decision...that's what Due Diligence is all about!

Cheers!

The best advice I can give you is to talk to other owners. ON THE PHONE. Then go and put hands on the actual car both at RCR and owners near you. Fly if you have to. Tie the trips in with business trip to save money. I stopped by RCR three times flying back from the east coast to San Francisco. These people who build these car LOVE to talk about them and show off their work. Ask to stop by. I bet you get rides just about every time if the car is running.

This is really the only way to know what you don't know to ask. You will reach a point that you just feel like you have enough information to make a decision. Everybody is different and require different levels of comfort. As long as you feel you are taking a risk that's not comfortable then continue researching the idea. That's basic due diligence.

I'll, and just about anybody else on this forum would be my guess, will talk to you on the phone, just PM them and ask. Hell, send me a phone number and time of day and I'll call you.

There's no secrets about these car. It couldn't be kept if there was one. Keep asking questions of the owners until you feel good about spending your money.

A good source of title information is Club Cobra and the Factory Five guys with their GTM. The basic process is pretty much the same for all these kit cars. The Cobra guy in your state will be able to get you on the right track. Ask them.

What seams difficult really isn't in hind site. I don't really know of a case where the car NEVER got registered. Mostly it's a matter of finding the state DMV employee who knows what to do. The big city office in the affluent neighborhood is usually the best bet. Go there and ask who to talk to, I bet you get a referral to a specific employee.

Have you ever seen a bulldog after a porkchop? Do that but be nice.

Mike, Jack is right. The SLC crew is very knowledgeable about that product. It seems to me that each build is unique because the product is relatively new. There is a lot of enthusiasm among the builders and they really are very anxious to share their stories of discovery as they forge onward. You will not be disappointed in the peer support that you'll find here.

Good luck on making your choice...and, pics or it didn't happen

Cheers!

Another thing that is great about the forum and a wiki that can contribute to new owners is the new ideas the current owners have come up with. I put money down on my kit and one month later got the word on a new kid coming, I still got the kit but it has sat for about 2 years now while kids, family, a race car and others gobble up my time. Now I am getting all the items to start the build here very shortly and I am on the forum all the time lurking. I have changed the direction of what I want to do with SLC and on so many little things because of owners feedback and I am sure my SLC will be the better for it. I am thinking there are like 10 people that will look at my SLC and say that was my idea and you stole it, good going. I hope I can also contribute in some way to a future builder myself. We will see, I have crazy idea also.
