OMG

I don't buy it Jim. Who the hell gets that angry that they want to kill and be killed?

Please don't make this another 'gun' thread, that's the argument that takes the least amount of mental engagement!

You guys are screwing up badly over there if the land that is oh so great, keeps on churning out these f*cked up people.

OK Mark, let pretend that these deaths were not caused by guns.

Lets pretend this was in your country, we have an angry person perhaps punching people, maybe running a few down with their car, even stabing some people......................

That would not have made World news and we would not be talking about it now.

You say we are "screwing up badly over here". Yes Mark we do kill lots more people than in your country. But judging by the anger seen comming from Brits on this site, we are no more angry or violent than you.

Lets see if we can figure out the differance? Why did 10+ people die in the Navy Yard today?

Was it bad luck?

Was it just a very efficient angry person?

Mark, can you think of any other reason these 10+ people are dead?

******************

Yes Mark we are "screwing up badly over here", we have made angery people very efficient!!!

Mark, do you think its a good idea to help angry people to vent their anger in the most efficient way possible?

I don't know Jim. Neither do you! I wish that we did. However, I firmly believe that if everyone simply rants on in the same old way ad infinitum, then 'we' will never find the answer or the remedy.

I do suggest that it should start at school. Forget about the bleeding hearts and artists that shout about the parent's right to teach their children and accept that a great mnany 'parents' haven't got a clue and fail to teach any form of basic principal to their kids.

Education is indeed a big part of the answer. However it is the very first thing that many such people reject. Horse , water, drink etc. Many of these issues begin at (broken, inadequate) home. It is sad that you have to have a licence for a dog, gun etc. but any idiot can have kids - and do.
Cheers

If you can read this thank a teacher. If you can count the dead ditto.

Just caught this and don't know what all the fuss is about. It's only 12 people - could have been much worse. I mean, in a Navy yard, you could have a crane topple over and BOOM! But you know, it's silly all the same. It makes me so angry and violent I feel like going and crushing, a, a, a grape. Now.

Now, this WAS a very silly thing for BOB to say:

Quote from Reuters: "At the White House, Mr Obama said he mourned "yet another" mass shooting" and sent his thoughts and prayers to the victims.

Oooops...

So Mark,

You don't know if its a good idea to make it possible for angry people to vent their anger efficiently, or you don't know why 10+ people died in the Navy Yard?

What saddens me Jim, is the fact that you come back at me with that! Think goddam you man, think. You have a brain, engage it!

We live in societies, you and I, that encourage slothfulness and reprimand any kind of real-world teaching. How dare a teacher teach values or reprimand a child for bad behaviour!

Wonder why our children grow up feeling entitled? I'd rather they grow up feeling empowered, with a strong sense of right and wrong and knowing that there are consequences for their actions.

I question here, in light of another maniac shooting, what the hell is wrong with our societies Jim, that so many people seem to seek fame or glory through heinous acts. Who is teaching people that killing others, because your life sucks, is a good way to sign out?

I am not discounting the UK, or attempting to suggest that the US is shittier. I am asking WTF? Get out of your trench and engage Jim.

How do we hope to fix this shit?

This is a tough one Mark , with the gunman dead we can only speculate as to his mindset or motives. Condolences for those that have lost loved ones in yet another tragedy.

There is clearly something going on in our society where the desire for some form of fame, glory, or publicity while in the process of checking out seems to be very desirable. Maybe this also explains the idiocy that is "reality TV", where people will subject themselves to extreme humiliation for the opportunity to have 15 min of "fame". Or, in the case of the Kardashians, an entire entertainment empire that supports 10 or so rather unintelligent (but street-smart) average looking people (with one admittedly spectacular rack) with no talent begins with leaking an embarrassing sex tape.

Jim's blind monotone rant about guns, fueled by his very strong internal biases, doesn't tell the whole story or explain much at all. Gun violence overall in the US is down, that includes homicides. Why then is this sort of mass killing (the kind that makes it on national and international news) on a big upswing? I don't remember much from my cultural anthropology courses. Hell, I can't remember what I had for lunch much less classes in college 25-30 years ago. Ultimately, there is something wrong with the fabric of our society that a cult of personality is far more important than a cult of character.

Jim, you always say 'angry people with access to guns'.

I guess people before 1966 (Charles Whitman) never got angry. We have had guns since before this nations founding. So what happened? Guns have remained the same, but something else changed. What was it?

Have you even asked yourself questions like these?

It's called MORALS, J.M. ...Morals. They're sadly lacking in the U.S today. And idiot politicians cannot 'legislate' them into existence.

Suicide by cop....they are fed up with life and too scared to take their own, but they know if they start taking the lives of others the police will shoot to kill.

That's my take on it.

I usually don't chime in on these issues because you will never change someone's mind about this specific issue, but this time I will

1) taking away the right to keep and bear arms for LAW ABIDING CITIZENS does NOT stop crime or atrocities like this on at the Navy yard.

case in point, this Navy yard is located in a part of our nation that has outlawed guns - you can be arrested for carrying a spent cartridge or empty magazine - - - and yet, this still happed in what the media would have you believe is a "safe zone" BULLSHIT.

we need to focus on stopping crime, fixing our laws that cater to the criminal, and taking a serious look at our legal system overall.

The barn door was opened when the first pilgrims stepped foot in this country - Criminals will never surrender there weapons (of any type) - we need to find a solution that does not destroy the rights of 99% of the population while putting them at greater risk from criminals who won't comply.

Rant off

let the flames begin

The 'gun' thing again......If they were outlawed, that guy would have found another way. Using a knife might not have resulted in less casualties, after all, who would hear it and sound an alarm?
So, I guess it was better that Assad used poison gas to kill thousands of innocent people intead of firearms? Our society, and not just the U.S., is hardened to violence. The drug trade, terrorists and even the government have produced daily images of attrocities, large and small, on our TV screens every damn day. The young are indoctrinated into a violent way of life, just like the children raised in long duration war zones. When they 'go off the chain' they react in the way they have been conditioned to act.
