Wonder why our children grow up feeling entitled? I'd rather they grow up feeling empowered, with a strong sense of right and wrong and knowing that there are consequences for their actions.
I question here, in light of another maniac shooting, what the hell is wrong with our societies Jim, that so many people seem to seek fame or glory through heinous acts. Who is teaching people that killing others, because your life sucks, is a good way to sign out?
There is clearly something going on in our society where the desire for some form of fame, glory, or publicity while in the process of checking out seems to be very desirable. Maybe this also explains the idiocy that is "reality TV", where people will subject themselves to extreme humiliation for the opportunity to have 15 min of "fame". Or, in the case of the Kardashians, an entire entertainment empire that supports 10 or so rather unintelligent (but street-smart) average looking people (with one admittedly spectacular rack) with no talent begins with leaking an embarrassing sex tape.
Jim's blind monotone rant about guns, fueled by his very strong internal biases, doesn't tell the whole story or explain much at all. Gun violence overall in the US is down, that includes homicides. Why then is this sort of mass killing (the kind that makes it on national and international news) on a big upswing? I don't remember much from my cultural anthropology courses. Hell, I can't remember what I had for lunch much less classes in college 25-30 years ago. Ultimately, there is something wrong with the fabric of our society that a cult of personality is far more important than a cult of character.
