Paypal, a warning!

A pal of mine was a bit careless when making a payment via paypal yeterday. He left off a number at the end of the chaps name (ie johnsmith@...... instead of johnsmith1@....)
easy mistake to make, however the £750 he was transfering has now been accepted by the person he sent it to and paypal have told him they can't get it back. Be VERY careful when using paypal, they boast that it's the "safest way" to do business and that you are "protected" when using it, just be aware if you happen to make a genuine mistake, you're on your own!

Simon,

Thanks for that I have also heard it is the same if making an online money transfer from your bank account to another.
If you do it regularly it can be quite easy to click on the wrong saved recipient. . Unbelievably if you get it wrong it depends on person you accidently transferred the money to being honest enough to return it, and the banks won't help you track them down as it would be breaking the data protection act.

A happy ending, but none-the-less, spooky was when a seller sent me an erroneous Paypal address (I simply cut and paste his address into the address field) which was not being used by anyone and consequently was unaccepted.

Anything you are buying of value should be done using an Escrow account. It is bullet proof. Both buyer and seller setup the account by supplying their accounts. The seller is then notified that the buyer has deposited the agreed upon funds and ships the merchandise. Upon arrival, there is an agreed upon inspection period. Only if the buyer accepts the merchandise are the funds released to the seller. No one including the buyer can remove any funds once deposited without the sellers and buyers approval/permission. If there is a dispute, there is an agreement between the buyer and seller on what should be done, ie. money refunded, return of product, who pays for the return etc.
It saved me over $1500 when I bought my GT-40 from Australia when there was a dispute.
