rear view camera

Has anyone installed one of the small cameras to get a better rear view. The inside mirror is close to worthless when backing up.

I'm more concerned about where to put the display. they have ones that clip on or replace the existing mirror. My concern here is the size of the replacement mirror they look rather large. I'm leaning towards a 4" flip up display mounted above the mirror in the roof liner.

Has anyone done this and can you share your thoughts now that its in. Waste of money and time or best thing ever.

Thanks Julian
I already bought the new side mirrors and plan to mount them on the doors. I have two mirrors mounted by the gas fillers on the nose. They look good but are really too far away and give limited view. Like people refered to in the thread it would be an added confort level. Just curious if anyone else went this route

Lloyd,

If you have a roll cage then it's easy to mount a long, 14"-18", convex mirror that works real well. Without a roll cage may be difficult to mount.

I was considering cameras until I tried this, all blind spots are removed. Vision covers out the passenger side window, the rear and to some degree the driver side. Side mirrors pick up all else. The only thing lacking is good vision 'far' behind but cars in close proximity are all seen.

Can be located thru offroad sites, where I found mine. If you need further let me know.

Lloyd,
I got a clip on rear view camera mirror. I mounted a large bullet camera right at the back of the rear clip in the number plate area.
Good things
- did exactly what was required in improving rear view vision and eliminated the enormous blind spot between the rear and side mirror views.

- with the camera right at the rear, it is great for reversing

- reversing at night is also much easier with the infra red night vision.

Bad things
- yes the monitor was too heavy to clip on to a small to average size rear view mirror, and though it lasted all the way to Le Mans, on the way back the original mirror detached from the windscreen, and no amount of superglue would persuade it to reattach for long. My solution was to make an aluminium support bracket screwed to the roof, not yet tested, but I have every confidence.

- when the sun is low and behind, the camera saturates and you can't see anything at all which makes it useless in those conditions, so have an additional glass mirror as a backup.

- down side of the camera position is that it needs to be properly sealed, I did have some internal condensation issues first thing in the morning until the camera warmed up. I think I can fix this by better sealing.

All in all and at a price less than £100 I was generally pleased, but with the downsides noted.

Mirror is a CL-650H I note is US$63.80 from i-Pmart

regards
Dave

Tim don't think a mirror is going to help with backing into or out of a spot. I want to see what the behind the car close proximity

Dave thanks for the feedback. I guess the display is an important factor here. I really don't want to hang anything on the existing mirror or mess with the attachment. The windshield is a pretty expensive piece to break.

I guess the question what size screen is usefull. Can a 2.5 or 3" screem be visible enough. I found a unit wiht a 2.5 inch display that folds flat when not in use. I was thinking about mounting it on the roof liner. Are the wireless units reliable or hardwire the best way to go?

Put a AVIC N-4 and my Ultima. It is wonderful -- has a 135 degree viewing angle and lines in it that give you back up and lane changing perspective. In the Ultima I have NO reviewing except the mirrors that have a Huge wing on both sides to see through.

LLoyd,

Here is my setup - I mounted a camera on the spider! Works pretty good!

John

Nice setup. I'm told that's the best place for the camera mounting.
I assume you have it wired to be on all the time

LLoyd,

The third picture shows an LCD Panel that can also serve as a mirror. I keep the unit turned on at all times. The camera is mounted is a third brake light housing that I picked up on eBay. The system is hard wired!

Hi Lloyd
I've installed a 150deg LED camera in the bottom flash panel below the rear clip and run it through a fold away 4" screen incorporated in an AV input car stereo system. (Stereo is located under the dash panel). It's a very useful aid when parking in tight areas and if kids are in the area when backing. On the highway it's also reasonably good although depth of field is a bit hard to gauge. I know another guy who's talking about installing one a bit higher up in the rear LeMans panel in his currently under construction GT40. It will be interesting to hear his feedback. Overall a big thumbs up as a useful viewing aid. I have submitted a rear shot on the car with the camera located on the bottom right of the flashing. I will try and get better photo's of the layout for you.
Regards
David

My car isn’t running yet so I’m not sure how the camera will work as a rear view mirror. I posted some pictures of my camera on.

Lynn Miner posted a piece on installing a wireless backup camera on.

My system started as a wireless backup camera but it also had a video input so I’ll be able to look at either camera. When the head end is in video input mode it has a button to flip the image so it will work looking forward or backwards. The inside camera will also be plugged into a PVR (personal video recorder) for track day use.

Al Wohlstrom,

The rearview Monitor with 6" TFT LCD monitor and camera was purchased from a company in China called Shenzhen Moxie Electronics Co., LTD (Moxie). The model number is MR-AC650H - it costs me $87 in January, '2007. You might want to Google them to find out an email or order address if you're interested in the unit.

Generally it works fairly well except occasionally I get a little blurring - I suspect this is caused by the heat from the engine affecting the camera which is mounted just above it on the spider!
