What transaxle with the L33 5.3

First post, please be gentle. I would like to use a GM L33 stock 5.3L. It is rated at 335Hp/340tq (tuned). I have spent the past 90 minutes doing a search with a lot on the LS1 but not the 5.3. The question is I would like a trans that will handle the limited power but is reasonably inexpensive ($1,000.00 bone yard) or ($2,000.00 rebuilt). What would you recommend? I was looking at the Audi boxes as a cheap way out and the adapters are readily available. Is the 016 an option and what is the price to rebuild or is another Audi box better? Any suggestions, Audi or not, would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get all the prices before I jump head first into a build.

Also will the 911 axles work with the Audi box?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Jim,

You could use a audi 016, but audi 01e is stronger.
FWD are hard to get in the US, but availiable in europe. 016 come from a audi 100 and 5000 and 01e from '92> audi 100, 5000 and A6.

I have an 016 for sale in your budget incl. shipping.

the Porsche 915 transaxel will handel that amount of power no problem and is with in your price range you will need to run it inverted or have the ring gear flipped to run it mid engine

No I don't think so. 016 aren't used in todays production cars I think.
Nowdays they use newer types like 01X but an old survivor is the 012.

016 should be good enough for your 335hp/340tq, with a bearing plate there should be no problems at all.

If you're are interested, PM me.

i typed a reaction in the wrong topic.

2004 Passat uses 012, 01e and 0A2 gearboxes, which one for the 1.8t I don't know.

012 is 5 speed and 01e and 0A2 6 speed.

VW Passats all use a transverse layout gearbox and will not work in your application(FWD transverse only)

016 can handle that power as long as you're not abusive, and the gearbox is strengthened a bit(bearing plate as suggested)

audi 012 and 01e are you best bet. adaptors are available.

G50 ore 993 6 speed built would be the good one to get but won't fall into your sub $2000 budget for sure.

Porsche G86 boxseter 6 speed is another good option.

The 012 is stronger then the 016? I know the o1e is better or even the o1x but I can not seem to find one.

OK kit car 101, do these Audi gear boxed need to be inverted like the G50 to work in the mid-engine design?.

Also who do you recommend to rebuild a 016 or 012, what is the rough cost?

No, they do not need to be inverted. Actually, I don't even think they can be
inverted.

Jim, try German Transaxles of America Home - German Transaxle of America They have lots of experience with the Audi boxes. A full rebuild gets up around $2,500. A rebuild with a limited slip is more like $3K.

You might want to just start out with trying a bone-yard 016 and then improve it once you have the car on the road and running and some of the kinks worked out. It's worth checking out the various ratios and codes that came with the 016 box as some ratio combinations are better than others.

They don't need to and can't be inverted. 012 should be a little weaker or as strong as a 016. 01e and 01X are stronger.

FWD versions are hard to get in the US, almost only quattro versions go to the US, very few that are around go to transaxle rebuilders and they know how much these can fetch.

If you want an 016 (possible with bearing plate) you can buy mine. under 1k incl. shipping to you. (I live in europe so shipping is expensive).
If you want an 012, 01e or 01x I can source one over here in europe but expect to pay €1500 excl. shipping for a low-mileage one from a 2004 car or so.

Bram

Is the Audi 016 shorter (height wise) than the G50-20. How do these compare dimensionally?

The G50/20 is the 993 six speed and is physically bigger than the audi 016 although not by much in height, maybe a difference of a couple inches at their tallest points on the main case. 016 has a must taller bellhousing flange however.

g50/20 is a far stronger gearbox in it own right, and thus is going to need some more space to house all its components. I do not have one here to compare actual dimensions for you.
