Windows 7

We have been testing on a couple PC's at the office. On the surface it seems to be less of a resource hog than Vista but I'm going to give it a little more time before I blow away XP on my laptop

Frank, living in the backyard of Microsoft has taught me many things. One is do not become an early adopter unless you have a propensity for pain. XP stable, Vista unstable, W7 Chernoble. Burn an image of Ubuntu, install it on your machine, download Open Office and Firefox and live a peaceful and happy life... :computer:

Any ideas why every other version of an MS OS is a dog while the ones in between aren't bad? For example:

Win 3.0: Dog
Win 3.11 (WFWG): OK
Win95: Dog
Win98: OK
Millenium: Dog

And on the NT side:

NT 3.5X: Dog
NT 4.00: OK
Win2K: Dog (but stable)
WinXP: OK
Vista: Dog
Win7: ??? If past history is any indication, it should be OK?

Is it as simple as an A and a B team working on sequential OS's?

My IT consultant has been beta testing W7 for some months now. It appears to be better than Vista. But then it all depends on exactly what you want out of the OS. I know plenty of people who got on just fine with Vista but they were non techie.

I'm by no means a techie, but I have a friend that is the head of a very large companies IT department. They have been beta testing W7. He had many positive things to say. Said it was a "clean" OS without all the bells and whistles, but, so far, is performing well. I'll pass along if he tells me otherwise.

Likewise our IT consultant has been doing Bets testing and says it beats XP in most areas and Vista will not get a look in. It is also more designed around business use (Vista was more home based)

I've been running it on my PC for two months now. It feels faster than Vista and about the same as XP 64 to me. It also overclocks better than XP (I'm running a 2.9 GHz i7 at 3.8 GHz w/ 6 Gb RAM) It seems very stable but it's a clean install and I'm not running 32 bit programs.

I actually liked 2000 Pro best. XP and especially Vista are such nanny OSes "Are you sure you want to do that? Really, really sure? Well, OK but I warned you. I'll ask again next time you boot just to be sure.":furious:

From what I can tell, Win 7 is getting great reviews - the first time people have actually been excited about a Microsoft product in years, if not decades. I've also read that the release of Win 7 will be good for the economy, as there is a lot of pent up demand for new hardware running a clean, stable Microsoft OS. I'm going to buy a tablet PC in the fall and am looking forward to the optimizations Win 7 is supposed to have for tablet PCs.

We've been testing it pretty hard here. We're going with thin clients, and so far, it's
been a mix of good and bad. I'll see if I can get more info from the guys working on
it - I'm in the UNIX/Linux/OSX side of things, and only really have to deal with PC/*nix
interaction.

I can understand why you would want a 'MAC' Keith, but your 'apple' looks to be one 'bite' or 'byte' short of the real thing:), but when your as PC savvy as me the _________ bit was easy to relate to, cryptic code for WTFATTA.

Ya got me Mac.... :)

I use Vista 64 Pro on my work machine and I'm actually very happy with it, the machine is high spec though. I also think a lot of the 'resource hog' accusations thrown at Vista were a bit unfair as not many people have taken the time to look at whats its actually doing by filling the memory etc.

But this thread is on Windows 7, I've tested this (W7-64 Ultimate) for the last few days on our home machine which I built from components ~3 months ago. It does look good, but I've run into issues with not being able to get the driver for my HP Laserjet 1020 to install properly which causes the machine to hang and there's been a few other occaisons is hung too which I've yet to identify the cause for. Updates from Microsoft also are hitting the thing reguarly.

So unless your inner Geek really needs satisfying I'd hang fire until 7 gets to the retail stage.

Interesting to hear that Doug - I too use Vista Ultimate on my laptop which has been rock solid and reliable. The unit is high-end in spec albeit 3 yrs old and is still very pleasant to work with.

I will take a look at W7 at some point although IMO I think the advice of waiting till it goes retail is very sensible.

One reason the product is better is that it was under new/better management. There were tighter controls on planning and execution from beginning to end and they tried to solve some of the most difficult problems such as being compatibile with literally 25K devices. No other platform has as much backward compatibility with as many available devices on the market from today or in the past.

It is a far better product and having tested the beta and the RC, I can't ever remember when the Windows OS felt so polished before being released. The beta was actually really good, and the RC even better.

I considered downloading the free beta of Windows 7 and trying it out on my WinXP Pro PC, but I decided not to when it said I'll need to reinstall all of my apps.

If you have Vista installed, you don't have to reinstall.
