Best radar detector

What is the best radar detector on the market? I normally do not drive over the speed limit by 5 MPH and haven't had a ticket since 85 and that was for doing 45 in a 25 in a Toyota but I really think its time to put one in the 40 as the car goes faster than I want it to. :)

I bought a Rocky Mountain radar / laser detector, and it is passive, and stops the signal from picking up the vehicle. However, I don't have any experience exceeding the limit with mine. I bought it because a friend, ex -Illionis State Police, recommended and sold it.

Here are a couple of sites that will show yo every imaginable one there is. Some of them will give reviews/comparisons etc. there are even radar detector detectors that will keep you invisible in places where detectors are illegal such as Virginia and Canada.

Happy hunting. I guess I should get at least one of these as I "Used To" have a history of being in a hurry.

I have had several and the best type to have is the GPS model that has static speed cameras in their database updatable. There may not be many (fixed cameras) in the US at the moment, but they're coming!

As for laser detection, I have not yet found one that will detect a police hand held laser gun or a laser driven camera before you are "in the beam". To avoid false alarms you can tailor the laser detection zone but this inevitably puts your dash mounted detector out of the radar "cone" which is usually targeted on the number plate. So, always fit a detector with a remote sensor.

THE most effective method is the radar beam "reflector" sometimes called a jammer, and these things really work. They simply reflect an aimed beam back at the gun which gets an "error" message and does not record any speed, but be warned, in the UK, if you are found with one you are liable to be charged with "obstructing the Police in the pursuit of their duties"

I've used Escort (old Cincinnati Microwave) products since 1985. I currently use the 9500i in my daily driver (Silverado) with the GPS, radar and laser detection. I move it around to other cars. I also have three 8500s in my Mustangs and GT40. No problems or surprises in 25 years. My older Escort models are fixed onto motorcycles.
Some HP units here in NC are using Lasers. Escort offered a jammer at a reduced cost with two front antenna and one rear. However, the new 'Atlanta' series laser units can only be detected on the newest of Escort products. The 'Atlanta' has a 7,000 fooot range and a .3 second shoot to display time. Pick and shoot from a bridge.

You all are a bunch of speed demons. :) Thanks for the info I will look at them all, I didn't realize that there is such a variance in price scale on them till after shopping a bit. If the price goes much past $500 USD I will put a governer on it. HA!

Valentine...I have 4 of them in different vehicles. Also have an Escort - but feel it's "iffy". You need to get to "know" your detector - just like your wife or girlfriend! The Valentine has not let me down in 15 years.

In my Kirkham I had a Passport Escort Remote Radar and Laser shifter. The radar and 2 laser shifters mounted in the cowl, and one more laser shifter on the license plate bracket. In CT I had a friend that was a State cop, I went by his stationary position at 60 mph and a voice and alarm came on indicating laser. When I got back to him he said the laser screen just scrambled jiberish. Not cheap, about $1,500 5 years ago, they probably have something better now. I never got a ticket in that car!!!
