Radios In A GT40 ??

Hi James

As much as I like the sound of the exhaust note on my 40 there is no way I could live with it on a long trip for endless hours.

I have gone to great lengths to soundproof the cabin to isolate the road and engine noise as possible.

The result is that I can have a conversation with my passenger at normal voice levels and can listen to the radio without any problem.

If I want to hear the exhaust I can open the windows otherwise the cabin is quiet.

Makes for much more enjoyable driving.

Ok, I was not going to admit this but I have an XM satellite radio with small amp coupled to Bose noise canceling headsets. Its all hidden in the driver door, Mike Trusty made fun of me for putting it in. :)

Jack: You need to post a pic of you in the drivers seat with the Bose headphones on listening to the XM radio. It will make you confession complete.

Whenever I run across a thread about original GT 40s I forward it to my friend who owns the "66 Road Car" that I posted about some time ago. I sent him this thread and he just sent me a response.

"I was very close to buying 1072/green color, which belonged to an English Johnny Carson-type. It had Mk 3 windows and an antenna mid top just behind the front windshield. Bill Mariott traded three Ferraris and cash to Bob Shelton Motors to beat out my offer."

Bill,
It was a guy named Noel Edmunds.
John Etheridge restored the car in a light green metallic with a dark green stripe and gold BRMs. It had WHITE leather seats then.
So to summarise ~ a very LOUD car despite the radio.

Jimmy I fitted my radio/CD/MP3 player up behind my dash out of sight, I use a remote to listen to the radio and a MP3 player for music rather than the CD as i cannot access the CDs (where would you put them anyway) the aerial is a an out of sight one stuck under the dash. Speakers are a dead giveaway as they are in the doors.

Darrell,
Those old radios of mine look the part but are best suited to saloon cars in my opinion.

We all know from the press reviews at the time, that the Mark III cars were pretty poorly fitted out, however I am still lost for clues as to their thinking when they fitted the radio set in the driver's door.

I had a similar idea to yours and would only do it if it was hidden or inconspicuous and I fitted some of Dimi's soundproofing.
The other problem with this car is the additional current consumption required.

Some radio locations in DRB's in Australia.
Side "pillar" mount of stereo with TV in Steve Shedden's red car, door mount in the blue car (probably using a remote), and more common dash mount in the green car.

Dalton,

Those DRB's look nicely appointed. I plan on a leather dash too. It give me some ideas as to where to mount the stereo aswell!

Graham.
