The explosive used on the United flight Christmas day

Yes, Al....very scary!

I'd say the jobs of those inspecting individuals and luggage just got more difficult, and what's to say that a remote "warming" device triggered by a cell phone couldn't be used to detonate such a device in some checked luggage tucked away in the cargo bay of a jetliner.

Makes driving look like a much more attractive alternative, doesn't it!

Question: Please explain how any of this relate to this form? Do you fly your cars?

Hi Gibson -

This is the Paddock. The Paddock is the only NON-Topical forum on GT40s. Pretty much anything goes but we do ask that people maintain respect of each other and post messages in relatively good taste..

Thanks!

This was the same stuff that the shoe bomber tried many years ago. It appears to not be fool-proof if that is two incidents of a fizzle rather than a boom.

I am extremely happy nobody except the dumb ASSassin was hurt. I fly 120+ segments a year so this is going to make waiting in the security line more painful but I for one do not feel less safe than before. Flying is still much safer statistically than driving or many other forms of transportation.

I have flown several of my cars, takeoffs have all been quite good, some of the landings could be improved upon, but as I managed to at least walk away [ or in one case hobble ] from them they must all be classed as successful.:)

PETN isn't really a binary explosive,as in being viable when mixed at the point of use. I doubt that any Soldier of Allah will reach paradise using it in this fashion.

If you are nervous about being disarmed while flying then develop a talent for drawing. I always carry a sharp 2H pencil in my pocket. I guarantee that any flight I am on which crashes due to terrorist activity will contain at least one Jihadi with a fatal neck wound from an improvised weapon.

I also try to wear my 'Mossad' sweatshirt. I'm not Jewish and I don't usually wear military insignia which I haven't earned, but if anything happens then I would prefer to be the target. While Mr Jihadi is focussed on me, my ex-competitive Thai-Boxer wife can crush his windpipe with an elbow strike. And believe me - she would.

Ha Ha, sorry no, but would like to erase the 'hourly rate' for those lessons from my memory:)..

I know what you mean... After having gone well airborn in my Cobra at the track - I had those visions seared into the back of my eyelids for months...

No video but plenty of corner worker witness reports and the D-A system recordings...

How scary on a scale of 1 - 10 given historical hindsight?

Probably about 3.

If you can kill thousands of people with a cardboard cutting knife and bring the entire world virtually to a standstill with just a small cloud of smoke then obviously fear is the main weapon.

Just think - you could ground the entire world airline fleet with a phone call and no-one needs to be hurt. That's where we are right now and IMO the only way to minimise (not stop) risk is to adopt effective tactics such as profiling.

We are not allowed to use profiling in the UK because it is not "Politically Correct", well stuff that people. If you are a white middle middle class retired professor from Wisconsin would I bother to search you? Fat chance.

This is not racist - it's reality and a defence mechanism.

Ye Gods! This man, on everyone's watch list, booked a flight to the United States, paid cash in Nigeria, gave the reason for visit "Vacation for 2 weeks" , and boarded a plane bound for Holland and thence transferred (2nd opportunity missed) to USA flight without any luggage..

Own goal I'm afraid and I thank God it failed.

"There is nothing to fear but fear itself" Who said that? I don't know but it's damned true. We must not let our Fear turn into a self destruct weapon.

And please Politicians all over the world. Will you STOP referring to "The War on Terror" and get your acts together for a pro-active and agressive counter to this stuff.

I thihk political correctness is going to bite us in the butt. If you have 19 male arabs of which 17 are Saudis that attacked us on 9/11, wouldn't it be fair to say that you would profile arab/saudis? No, let's check 90 year old, white, wheelchair bound women, yeah, yeah, that's the ticket! Must not offend those that wish to blow us up! What a bunch of boneheads!

Fly EL-AL Airlines, . I felt safer going through israeli airlines and airports than any other. Unless they were comfortable with what you were about, you weren't getting on their plane. Its tough to describe but they, EL AL really do care who what. Profile sure, the TSA can kiss my butt. I fly constantly, and I do my best to avoid big airports that have unreliable and unattentive workers. Its that carelessness that is going to get people killed.

Oh by the way, the horse is out of the barn again. how many times are we going to fix the gate when you only have to replace the guy who was supposed to close it in the first place?

It's really funny, in arab countries they are not at all worried about political correctness. Try building a church or synagogue there, or bring a bible. We are turning into a nation of pantywaists, scared to death of offending anyone at any cost, even our existence. At the same time, if we want these people to stop screwing with us, we should get the hell out of their countries. Our brand of freedom doesn't work for everyone, and just maybe, they don't want to change.
