Assembly of CAV #170

I chose to call this an "assembly" because I'm just not making the build commitment that many in this section do. I'm in awe of the ingenuity and persistence of some of the people on this thread.

Although I have the tools and know how to build a car, I learned my lesson with a 1967 Triumph TR-4a purchased in 1996 that I hope to be done with this summer (I'm close - I swear). In my old age I've figured out that I enjoy driving a lot more than I enjoy wrenching.

So, I have essentially purchased a roller except that Johann will be building the car in his shop to roller status.

Current plans are:

Keith Craft 363ci Fuel Injected motor
RBT 5spd Transmission

I'm completely undecided on color. Current thinking is either the white with red/green strip combination or a 1967 interpretation of the Red Bull Racing F1 cars - Dark blue base, Yellow/Silver/Red Striping.

Suggestions, tips, tricks welcome.

Sincerely,

Ron

Ron,
Good luck with your asembly. If you like a white car, google "ford falcon xc cobra". I have seen a GT40 done over here in Perth with this colour scheme. Its simple but stunning in the flesh. Another plus is its a true Ford colour scheme.
Best of luck. Gus.

A couple of questions for those on the forum. I attempted to search and apologies if I missed it.

Does anyone know the paint code for this blue? I emailed [email protected] but didn't get a response.

Does anyone know the maker or brand of these side mirrors? Are they period correct?

Thanks,

Ron

The Mirrors are not period correct. The blue looks similar to the blue on the new Camaro and the Z06 Corvette but probably is different. Just my 2 cents. I would go with fuel injection since it is your car and not a 1966 original car.
Just make it the way you want and forget what all of us suggest.

That is Chris McAllister's car, I think. If he hangs out at all on this forum, he may be able to tell you what it is. I used to have phone numbers for him, but I can't find them anymore. If I do, I will contact him and see if I can't get some information for you, but don't hold your breath.

You might also contact Jay Cushman, he has seen more of the original cars in the recent past than anyone I know, and he might have seen Chris' car and be able to help you out.

FI System delivered in 3 days...

Well this is a bit early compared to the rest of the vehicle, but it is very cool looking.

Hey Ron, I just called Johann today! We talked about your car and it's progress, looks great! I'm watching this very closely and I need to make a trip to see these in person!! I'm sending you a PM for more info. Thanks! Matt

I wish that shop were mine. Mine (a glorified garage) is a complete mess. It is Johann's. Every tool is in the right place and neatly arranged. Totally disgusting ;-)

Those kits are amazing though! All the parts labeled in a bag, pre bent lines, etc. Watched the tech for a bit. Like building a full scale model with a numbered instruction book.

A few more...

They're moving so fast that I'm renting a Uhaul to get the body to the painter and just rushed the engine and tranny guy...

Engine is being built by Sperry Engines out of Cedar Rapids Iowa. Great guys to deal with so far. Hope to have pictures from them soon.

RBT transmission. Spoke to Mr. Butfoy today, supposed to get a delivery date tomorrow as well.

Wow, this is fast...

It is coming togerther quickly and now that my car is home there is more room to move about. Will try to see your car tomorrow, if possible, and next Friday (July 16th) AM to see the progress.
I know you will enjoy it even more being able to watch its creation before your eyes. Great people make "Better than Best" cars.

Hey Ron, Many thanks for the phone call and great info! I really appreciate your taking the time to do this. I got the info from Johann today so will see how this can go together! Might take a while but I'm patient. I will definitely keep in touch and keep the photos coming, the car looks great even in primer! Thanks, Matt

Hello Ron,
The car looks great. I am building CAV #169, I have had it since January. If you have any questions or tips to share please feel free. I check in with the site periodically. Keep up the good work.
