Assembly of CAV #170

Nice Ron.....is the car at Johann's? Looks like his shop. I'll be interested in the heat shields you fabricate. Keep the pics coming.

Fuel System is about done...

Apologies for the lousy camera phone photos.

Motor mounted (permanently). A bit of plumbing left to go, then to be sorted (corner weights, dyno tuned, etc.)

Weather is improving, so looking forward to a drive soon.

Best,

Ron

The beast is alive...

The plumbing is now done and the motor is in. 3rd start is in the video (1st start on the wrong fuel map, 2nd start I forgot to record:stunned:). Now I just have to figure out all the software for the injection system. It is running on a standard 347ci map, but the motor is 363ci and needs time on the dyno.

YouTube - CAV GT40 - Early start from build

I haven't figured out how to lower the idle yet, so it is idling too fast.

Looks good Ron!

When is the "maiden voyage"?

Also the positive battery cable looks very close to the tub....that would not be pretty if it touches! I'm sure Johann will re-index it to prevent that from happening.

Like the Bible says "Go forth, drive and crush bugs!"

Ron,
Lookin' and soundin' nice!

Got questions for you. What ECU are you using to control your fuel injection? Also, what aux headlight, size and mount are you using?

Congrats!

Tom

Now that the motor is in Johann needs to finish the wiring and all the niggly bits. He has a couple of bikes to get out of the way. Then Apex has the corner weights, then to the dyno for tuning. I hope mid April.

I had that battery which is a bit too tall, then I got a side post battery that is too large that I have to return and get another (ah the joy).

I am very excited though. We're planning a trip to the NC coast this summer with a number of friends flying in from Colorado. We're planning to take the GT40, the Cobra (from you) and my 328GTS. Swapping out along the way with the family in a chase SUV. Should be fun and quite a sight.

Thanks!

ECU is the Fast XFI (was a kit with the Inglese injection system). Infinitely adjustable and I have to get a lot smarter.

As for the lights I attached a pic. They were purchased from Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply and are 5.25". They had a plastic back that we mounted in the recess.

very nice, maybe you can flip the + holder 180...

also I see your muffler 2 outputs are not 100% horizontal ;-)
ofcorse I know its not ready yet :) I'm just jealous.
It looks like you have a nice ride this summer.

Thanks Ron, I just emailed Daniel Stern with a pic. Hopefully, he still has them available.

FAST XFI is a nice system and having it matched up with Inglese's Injection system is even better. If you have problems, then you only have to deal with one company.

Hopefully he will, he had a couple when I ordered mine. He is a "straight shooter" when it comes to lighting. I've asked him a number of times about lighting solutions and he has always given me a "candid" but truthful response. Fun guy to talk to.

Ron,
I spoke to Dave several times. He even emailed me around 1am last Saturday to answer my last email from Friday evening. Unfortunately he is out of those lights but recommended a Cibie lamp to use instead. He is also out of the mounting bucket to go with it so he will be contacting me when it's all in and I can pay him then.

Great service....for a change.

Darn close to road legal....

Really can't wait now. Drivers seat, adjust the front clip and rear clip, program the tach and speedo, windshield (body/paint man broke the first one), DMV inspection and a dyno tune.

A few pics...

1987 Mozda RX-7 electric mirrors are the ones I put on my CAV. They were very easy to install by sanding the aluminum plate that attaches to the door. I used my 3/8" electric drill with a 6" sanding disk. I sanded the edge at top about 1/16" tapered to the bottom so the mirror would be parallel to the pavement. I used a piece of truck inner tube for a gasket between it and the door. I sliced almost all the way through the inner tube along the edge of the base I sanded. Then I carefully cut (after I bolted it to the door) through to the out side and pulled the rubber around the base and it made a perfect fit without scratching the paint.

My neighbor hard wired it to the electrical system with a fuse so the mirrors could be adjusted from inside the car.

Just outside steering wheel at 8 c'clock you will see the control buttons that came out of the Mazda. Perfect position for adjusting the mirrors without taking your eyes off the road.

The other pictures show you how good they look on the car.

JOSEPH
